Any other way to ID a V8 besides the badge?

I was siting in traffic the other day wondering if you could identify a V8 over a v6 from the exterior without seeing the grill badge. I thought maybe the tailpipe was slightly larger but I couldn't tell.

Yes, the v8s drivers are at the gas station more often and crying about their MPG :sobbing: :jk:

I also wondered the same and did some looking. The tailpipe and the stance (forward rack) appear to be identical. The only way to really tell a v6 from a v8 is the sound; the v8s have the nice balanced exhaust note.

For a later 2003 V8, from the rear, they have the weight distributing hitch. It's a tubular hitch that mounts to the frame rails.

The V6 has a weight carrying hitch that is only attached to the rear-most cross member. Starting in 2006, the hitch was optional on the V6, so some might not even have it.

From the front, the badge on the grille is the only way you can tell. From the back, the hitch is the only giveaway. The exhaust system is identical on both the V6 and V8, so that doesn't help.

As DocMT said, you can often tell by the stock receiver hitch. The V6 has a less-robust one (maybe a Class II?) than the V8 which is a Class III/IV weight distributing hitch.

I've debadged mine and I would assume the only way is the front rake and the rear hitch with air lvling suspension

Not really. Toyota uses heavier springs in front to offset the extra weight of the V8 engine.

Like everyone said but consider some people remove the the hitch, from badge and level it so there's no way to tell. Also the air suspension was optional so that's not an indicator.

I suggest stomping the skinny pedal and when the truck in question blows by you that it has the V8!

I'll add to this.....the v6 sounds like sh!t most of the time. It's plenty smooth but just doesn't sound refined at all.

The only way you can reliably tell if it is a v8 or v6 without popping the hood would be by the VIN. I belive the 5th digit is U for V6 (1GR-FE) and T for V8 (2UZ-FE)
