This is what I did. removed 4runner emblem. Painted chrome housing black. Reinstalled 4runner emblem with 3m double stick tape.

After I read this post, I took mine off to see what's involved. It's not difficult to remove the garnish at all.

I took the Toyota emblem itself off and plastidipped it for kicks. It's just double face taped on there. Ok- actually the tape they used is ridiculous. I was pulling the ENTIRE TRUCK back trying to pull it off. You gotta really want it! I think I may just fill the 4Runner holes in and do a writeup eventually though...

I painted it while still installed. Process: I removed the lettering with fishing line,used 3m adhesive remover to get off the rest of sticky tape from housing with small plastic kids ruler. I bought a plastic table cloth $1. it covered pretty much the whole back of the rig. Cut out the area that was going to be painted,taped off all areas exposed around housing,lightly sanded then painted (3 coats). Bought 3m double stick tape to reattach 4runner emblem. I know you didn't ask how I did it,in case you or any other member decide to do this mod this is how.

Thank you for your detailed mod. I have already taken the what I consider overly large 4 RUNNER badging off, but have not decided what I wanted to do with the "base plate". At least now I know I could paint it with minimal concerns. Thanks again. Be safe.

No. The "4 RUNNER" letters and the "T" Toyota emblem are taped on. The chrome moulding is held on with some 10 mm nuts inside the hatch, and a couple of plastic push pins. I removed the "T" and painted it. It's located with 2 plastic pins and held with NASA grade adhesive...

Limited models have the Smart Key system and these arrows allow them to control their rear window up/down.

It's to open/close the rear window and also functions to unlock/lock the doors. Weird, I thought every 5th gen had this, may just LEs.

Not hard. Lots of adhesive remover and strategically placed 3m double sided tape.

LOL i like your poormans photoshop of your license plate. lol. It actually is much easier to cover the plates up with tape, that to crop it out. Haha.

Dude, you should get personalized "ANTMAN" license plates. That would be genius.

Nah. Most car manufactures use the same thing to hold on to exterior moldings, badges and the sort. You just need clean surfaces to work with. I used to have vent visors on my 3rd gen and they never ripped off. Hail is a different story.
