Anyone Else Drive In Fear?

After so many LBJ failures being posted recently, I've been just anticipating one of my unknown-mileage-probably-248k mile units failing on the interstate.
I'm constantly going through the roll-over scenarios- in my head- when I'm driving.
I finally got new LBJ's and bolts today from OEMPartSource.com.
They're clearly 10x higher quality than the ProForged units I bought and returned.
I'll be installing them with my Tacoma free-spin swap, as well as new LCA bushings and wheel bearings.

Maybe the OEM porn will help someone else replace their joints, and go with OEM [emoji1360]

I drive in fear because I'm no longer in a German car. Aside from that, my LBJs were replaced a few months ago at 98k. Do it.

PS - Your Runner is probably my favorite thus far. :first: That color!!!

I love that color. I was really paranoid about mine before i changed them in the spring of 2015. So yea! I know the feeling! LOL

This is some good inspiration. I'm ordering parts now for doing upper and lower ball joints as well as inner and outer tie rods.

A question for anyone: beyond the UBJ snap ring, wire, dust cap, and LBJ flanged bolts suggested http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...nner-tie-rods-ball-joints-wheel-bearings.html , what else should I be looking at down while I have the front end apart?

Yes - and I'm up for all of this soon - including the Taco manual hub swap when I can find some :)

Nice to see another Anthracite! (Mine's so filthy, I forgot how nice it looks)
I did my LBJs with my lift at about 200k on the clock. Looking forward to another 200...

I never drove in fear....until I blew my radiator apart.....now I must say I will dive with more caution....maybe it was the 250k on it. If on the highway/public roads I have no fear even now.....out in the mountains....its starting to creep up a little.

Same boat. Reading too much on this forum... ended up going OEM lower ball joints with the bolts as well.

Also milkshake fear too.. did the external tranny cooler. No more fear!

lol I think sometimes it makes us scared for no reason.

I would guess the larger the tire, the more likely the wear on the balljoints will be an issue.

I just turned 200K on my Runner.....and it's had 265/70R16s on it its whole life. I'm just hoping I don't have a LBJ failure before I can swap in the new axle.

I was less fearful of a rollover or lookign dumb on the roads around town...

...and more worried about having an LBJ fail while overlanding to some remote spot, with no backup. So i had them fixed recently, along with the uppers. Really fixed my creaky suspension travel. Did tie rods at the same time.

OEM uppers, lowers, bolts, tie rod ends done just now with my frame swap at 170k. Drives so much tighter on the highway. Nothing looked dangerous, but SOMETHING must have had play I could not feel with my hands. No fear here.

The fear is real!!

However, this happened when the bolts I used, were not secured with Locktite.... make sure you don't skip this step folks!

Please elaborate? I wonder why it lasted so long from the factory without locktite? Does the factory service manual call for threadlocker?

I can't remember where I read it... but saw it in a DIY thread here. The thread suggested using the blue locktite. I did when I first installed the balljoints, but had to remove them to reboot my CV axles, and when I put them back in, I forgot to Locktite them. This was the result...
