Also milkshake fear too.. did the external tranny cooler. No more fear!
I drive in fear because I'm no longer in a German car.
Your Runner is probably my favorite thus far. :first: That color!!!
This is some good inspiration. What else should I be looking at down while I have the front end apart?
what years/models Tacoma for the knuckles? '96 4cyl?
Exactly! I was so nervous going up to the mountain a couple weekends ago. I was really hoping the freezing temps/snow build-up wouldn't cause the joint to shrink/fail or become brittle and fail! It would have been a horrible place to break down.I was less fearful of a rollover or lookign dumb on the roads around town, and more worried about having an LBJ fail while overlanding to some remote spot, with no backup.
...but SOMETHING must have had play I could not feel with my hands. No fear here.
Same boat. Reading too much on this forum... ended up going OEM lower ball joints with the bolts as well.
Also milkshake fear too.. did the external tranny cooler. No more fear!
This. Although there's always something else to be paranoid about. It's the reason I don't particularly like owning older vehicles.
"It's the most reliable vehicle around!"
..something breaks.
"Well, you have to expect it from such an old vehicle."
"So what you're saying is... it's th emost reliable vehicle, but expect things to break down on a regular basis."
"Yup."
"Okkkkkey dokkey then."
Actually, I think you went too far. The wire, dust cap, and snap ring are all included with the OEM UBJ. I just did mine.
[MENTION=85040]99problems[/MENTION], you'll need the 8 bolts for the LBJ's to mounts them. (they come with the castle nuts)
(unless that's the bolt flange you ordered)
However, this happened when the bolts I used, were not secured with Locktite.... make sure you don't skip this step folks!
How many miles before the bolts backed out? I didnt put locktite on mine and I keep checking visually to see if any bolts have started backing out. I wont have time to put locktite on until after Christmas.
This is your friendly reminder to put locktite on your bolts.
Since this thread was bumped-
I was going to wait till I got new wheel bearings on the Tacoma wheel hubs to do the LBJ and LCA bushings, but I couldn't wait any longer.
Got my OEM LBJs and Whiteline LCA bushings installed a couple weeks ago.
LBJs are easy peasy, and- as long as your underside isn't rusty, and you have a factory bottle jack- the LCA bushings aren't too tough either.
To make pressing the bushing sleeves in easier, I put them in the freezer. I didn't get to doing the bushings the weekend I thought I was going to, so they ended up being in the freezer for a week- nice and shrunken [emoji12]
The factory bottle jack popped the stock bushings/sleeves out without much trouble, and the new ones dropped most of the way in. With a small hammer, and using "channel locks" to straddle the bushing- using the channel locks on the lip of the sleeve- the sleeve tapped right in. [emoji1360][emoji322]

Now I can say I no longer drive in fear [emoji1373]
A lot of talk about using OEM for this. What are people's opinions on Sankei 555 brand? I know they are well respected in other import communities..
