Anyone running the GY MT/R kevlars?

I'm contemplating a set of the 275/70/17s instead of the 285 DuraTracs. Love my 265 DTs and I know everyone loves the 285, but I'm not sure I want that extra width. These would be mostly a summer tire, and I would go back to the ATs in winter. Appreciate any feedback, especially on road handling.

I was strongly considering MT/Rs on the 4Runner until I bought a set of Duratracs from Joneseyyy. I always ran MT/Rs on my 05 Tacoma when I had it and I loved the tires. Excellent handling, great off-road capability, and they lasted forever (I got 60k miles out of one set). However, since running Duratracs on the 4R I decided that they aren't worth the extra cost despite how much I like them. There's also a 5lb difference in weight - MT/Rs being heavier of course.

I don't think you can go wrong with either tire. The Duratracs seem to have a more consistent pricing scheme and MT/Rs are typically more expensive. But, I just checked on Tire Rack and the MT/Rs are only $40 more for a set of four.

Thanks for your input LM. Looks like the 275 MT/R is 4 pounds heavier than a 285 DT. Almost in inch less in tread width. I might give them a try. I was most concerned about highway handling. Not sure how they will be in wet roads either but I don't go Andretti in the T4R anyways. GY has the $80 rebate on both models right now. After that refund I would be into the MT/Rs for just over a K.

They get really good reviews and I really considered them before too when I got my Duratracs ,but they are asymmetric,meaning they are directional, so you used to have to put them on with white letters out on most sizes .

They changed!Now ,I just looked them up and all but a couple of sizes have BSL which they say stands for Black Serrated Letters instead of the OWL(Outlined White Letters) they had. A couple of my friends here at work with Jeeps swear by them and they do look killer.

I dig they way they look to. Wondering how they are on road. I like the sidewall much better than duratrac. They ran them on the test vehicle on the rubicon. Not sure what size. see pics.

i had the MTRs (the old style) on my 93 and they were f'ing awesome. handled winter pretty well too, come to think of it. hmmmm, you may be opening up my mind about my next set of tires. 4 lbs heavier but 1 inch narrower than the 285 Duratracs? wonder if the mpg hit would be pretty comparable? the MTR is a more aggressive lug, though, even considering the narrower contact patch.

These do look nice. I'm leaning towards 275s myself, but had nearly decided on the BFG A/T's over the Destinations, because of the more aggressive tread. This definitely merits consideration, though. I'll be following this thread for sure.

Thank you ALL for your replies, you guys rock. Links to reviews and other threads, great insight.

What the hell, with all the interest I'll give them a shot. Not sure when I will get them on; when I got my quote a few days ago they did not have them locally and would order them in (and it sounded like they needed more from GY, not just another Discount dealer).

Most of my research found favorable reviews. Probably not quite as good as the DuraTrac on hard packed ice, but they don't sound like white knucklers either. The only complaints I found were from a few years ago, when apparently they were only offered with the white walls. Some posters said the white letters damaged and started wearing off after one trail. I would want black anyways. My main concern was highway handling, but again what I read was positive in this area.

And I am not quite sure if they were directional originally, but it sounds like now they can be rotated front to back and side to side. The wider spaced lugs always face out, but they can roll either way.

Goodyear Duratracs-5500 miles-sold for $700 credit back to Discount Tire
Bought new 285/70/17 Goodyear MT/R's today for $320 out the door after $80 rebate. Should be in by Wednesday.

Plus I have a whole set of 285/70/17 BFG AT KO's on 4th Gen Sport rims I bought on CL for $200.

ZERO Broken studs ------Discount Tire is good and because an impact was not used for installing my wheels.

Harper haven't you had bfg Ats, Mts and duratracs?

How do the bfg ats compare to the rest on road. i'm thinking of them in 275 or 285. GY MTR are sweet but not sure best for road use. look awesome though

Dont flame me here but have any of you guys give the GY authority's a try I guess they are made just Walmart I have seen some people running them but have never gave them a shot.

These MT/R were on my Land Rover. I would say for a norther climate that sees snow / rain the Duratrac is a much better tire. The MT/R was not very good in light snow / ice / even rain.

Bought new 285/70/17 Goodyear MT/R's today for $320 out the door after $80 rebate. Should be in by Wednesday.

Excellent! Our club is growing fast! Mine might be in by Saturday. Looking forward to getting them on.
