Apple iPhone 5S/5C

If I ever render 1080P video on my phone, that'll come in mighty handy.

Mossberg
The iPhone 5s boasts something called a 64-bit processor, which means the system can process data in bigger chunks, and thus much faster. But I didn’t notice any dramatic speed improvement, partly because few apps have yet to be rewritten to take advantage of it.

CNET
Apple’s core apps on the 5S are 64-bit optimized, but I didn’t anecdotally appreciate huge gains in most of them … except for the camera. It’s hard to tell how the A7 will make the iPhone 5S better, even if you can sense the speed. The killer apps don’t seem to be here yet.

The Verge
Today, the 5S is but a minor improvement over the 5, with only the camera and perhaps Touch ID truly counting as purchase-worthy upgrades.

Anandtech
In many ways it's an evolutionary improvement over the iPhone 5, but in others it is a significant step forward.

Again, Apple marketing tends to the sheeple and tech press. I'll happily rejoin the flock a year from now when the iPhone 6 comes out with a larger screen, more cores, and more non-Apple 64-bit optimized applications.

All needling aside, the 5s is a great phone. I just don't need one.

dwc, it sure seems like you're really trying hard to make yourself feel better. :(

I see that you quoted Anandtech...but weird that you did not quote the CONCLUSION of that technical article.

For an IT guy, you need to read up on your own field.

It's Apple marketing Bro' Science. Clock speed, additional cores, and a better GPU are far more important on a phone.

This is just plain funny. Clock speed and cores! :D I suggest that you stop posting in this thread because this is just downright embarrassing! And yeah, 1.3Ghz dual core CPU of A7 downright embarrasses your quad (and dual quad) cores and uber high clock speeds (2.3GHz)! Please stop spilling nonsense.

Here is the conclusion of Anandtech:
From Anandtech:

"The A7 SoC is seriously impressive. Web browsing is ultimately where I noticed the A7's performance the most. As long as I was on a good internet connection, web pages just appeared after resolving DNS. The A7's GPU performance is also insanely good - more than enough for anything you could possibly throw at the iPhone 5s today, and fast enough to help keep this device feeling quick for a while.

Apple's move to 64-bit proves it is not only committed to supporting its own microarchitectures in the mobile space, but also that it is being a good steward of the platform. The immediate upsides to moving to 64-bit today are increased performance across the board as well as some huge potential performance gains in certain FP and cryptographic workloads.

The new camera is an evolutionary but much appreciated step forward compared to the iPhone 5. Low light performance is undoubtedly better, and Apple presents its users with an interesting balance of spatial resolution and low light sensitivity. The A7's improved ISP means things like HDR captures are significantly quicker than they were on even the iPhone 5. Shot to shot latency is also incredibly low.

Apple's Touch ID was the biggest surprise for me. I found it very well executed and a nice part of the overall experience. When between the 5s and the 5/5c, I immediately miss Touch ID.

From a CPU and GPU standpoint, the 5s is probably the most futureproof of any iPhone ever launched. As much as it pains me to use the word futureproof, if you are one of those people who likes to hold onto their device for a while - the 5s is as good a starting point as any."

Common sense...please try and understand what the article is saying...you miss the boat dude!

But, yeah, wonderful, you should wait for iPhone 6...because you can't upgrade anyways. What's the point of your post here?

Common sense: most people don't render video on their phone. And if they do, their poor old 5 or 5c will do the job just fine.

I can upgrade whenever I want if I'm willing to pay the freight. I've had every version of the iPhone up until the 5s.

Don't let facts or reason get in the way of your posts. Now, let me get back to watching the Vikings lose!

Thanks for the coaching. I didn't read the whole article after you told me to.

1. browsing. Ok, your average person does browse using a phone. I'm not sure how many people are screaming that their browsing isn't fast enough...on a tiny screen.
2. potential gains. Hmm, you're gonna upgrade a phone for potential gains. "Hey typical phone user, this phone is going to be *awesome* six months from now."
3. camera. If you take a lot of low-light pictures, that might be important.
4. TouchID. nifty. Too bad it's not nifty enough to put on the 5c.
5. future proof. You're worried about a future proof phone that you're going to replace next year or the year after? I'm not.

Thai, you are an awesome posting machine. I'll leave this thread to your safe keeping where you can post unapologetically awesome benchmarks about the greatest phone *ever*. Until Apple tells you it isn't about this time next year.

I promise not to bother you again until they announce the iPhone 6. Cross my heart.

LMAO.....like talking to sheep! Or a wall, whichever makes more sense...

Why did you own an iPhone 4S? It was much less of a change than going from 5 to 5S. Ok, yeah, good reasoning there.

Facts? You're the one that relies solely on GHz and core count, remember?! And you're in IT! Tell me how weird that is!

And yeah, if you haven't notice, then you know that you miss the point of the article. READ AGAIN and try to look at it objectively.

Maybe you SHOULD read the WHOLE Anandtech review! Geez! Thanks for admitting your bias/ignorance.

Browser...it is about LOADING A PAGE! Geez, dude, are you really in IT?! Yes, no matter screen size, the speed at which a page loads is important.

Any phone can take a decent pic in daylight. What separates smartphone cameras is the inside pics or pics at sunset.

TouchID is expensive i am sure...and thus only 5S has it. In addition, i read somewhere that TouchID does require faster processor...thus, the need for A7 (same with Slo-Mo video etc.).

Future proof is always nice, esp. at how fast the tech world is evolving. Usually, within 3-6 months, a processor becomes second rate. Thus, having a processor that is twice as fast as 2nd rated chip (S800) is a good thing.

And remember, future proof also equals higher resale value IF you decide to dump it after one year.

So, yeah, i suggest that you think what i wrote before posting again. No need to hate on me...that's childish. Use the brain that you have. And don't let a non-IT person school you on tech stuff dude! :D

BTW, i am sure that iPhone 6 will be better in nearly every way. So what? I buy what i think is the best today. You may not think that 5S is worthy...but why did you buy 4S? :D

Because you asked. I dropped my iPhone 4, 3 times before it stopped working. The 4s was the current model. I'm glad we agree that the iPhone 6 will be the greatest phone ever. You seem angry, bro'. You must be a Vikings fan. Wow, they were terrible today....

Here's an interesting article from my feeds this morning...

iPhone Sales

Yup, read that also. Some article mentioned that iPhone 5C sales will gradually go up later. Techies who want their phones now will buy 5S right away...thus, the large discrepancy b/w 5S and 5C sales. Those who are non-techies will buy 5C more as the crazy lines at stores disappear.

Yeah, what is impressive is that despite 5S being just an update and with 5C pre-ordering, 5S still outsold iphone 5 last year alone. And China apparently had very little to do with this, according to dwc graph above.

What carrier are you using? Pre-paid or contract? So, you pay only shipping on any new phones anytime? Family plan?

I understand that you want to believe that 5S is nothing special...because you already spent money on the 5 last year. Wonderful. Why did you buy the iPhone 5 last year? It wasn't any special. Barely better camera (unlike this year) compared to 4S. Slightly longer screen with same resolution. More scratch surface vs. glass. A6 was not that much better than A5, esp. given that you don't care about those things! :D Was 5 any noticeably better than 4S except for the longer screen? Your arguments are weak and just plainly in denial.

5S, on the other hand, offers REAL noticeable difference in function/usefulness (TouchID & better low-light camera) and multiple times faster processor. In addition, unlike iPhone 5/4S, the 5S processor is way more future-proof than ever before (equals BETTER resale value!).

Facts are facts. It seems like you are the one that has gotten facts mixed up with your own emotions.

Is iPhone 6 better? Sure, but why buy that?! Wait for iPhone 10! Stupid argument IMHO.

BTW, ask anyone who owns 5S...TouchID is fabulous! Instant access to your phone.

BTW, here is a nice article about smartphones and MPs from a very respected site: How many megapixels do you need?: Connect

"If you doubled the number of megapixels on a camera’s sensor, you’d halve the amount of light that each pixel would have to measure, which means even more noise. In fact, it might well be more than double as you’d have to find room for all the extra ancillary components on the sensor too. So while increasing the resolution seems like it should boost the amount of detail captured, there’s a chance that the resulting stronger noise reduction would actually decrease the detail levels.

However, it is possible to increase the resolution without boosting noise levels if you also increase the physical size of the sensor.

So how many megapixels do you need? Here’s the shortest answer we can muster: for most purposes 3MP is plenty, but you might want to shoot at around 8MP for the crispest possible details. 8MP is a sensible minimum for big prints and 4K TVs, and even higher resolutions allow you to crop photos without sacrificing quality too much. However, make sure that very high resolutions are matched by an equivalent increase in sensor size."

You can see that despite iPhone 5 (not 5S) lower MPs (8MP), it has way less noise than Galaxy S4 picture which has 13MP camera. GS4 camera also does not produce much more details either. Nokia 1020 is just a monster because of its bigger sensor and 38MP camera. Unfortunately, the other aspects of the Nokia camera (e.g. shot to shot time, uneven night shots, etc.) leave a lot to be desired! :(

Thai, my friend. You really aren't very good at this.

Because you asked. I bought the 5 because it is taller and could display more data in OmniFocus. That's my primary non-phone use for my phone. Are you going to ask me why I bought the iPhone 3 next? What I had for breakfast? Why I bought a TE vs an SR5?

I'm glad we agree that the iPhone 6 will be the greatest phone ever. I'm relieved it will have even more future-proofing and potential capability than the 5s.

And with that, I leave this thread in your unapologetically, future-proofed, potential performance gains hands. I can't say it's been fun, or interesting, but I can say there's no point in replying to the next random thought that you plunk out on your keyboard.

Enjoy your 5s.

Oh, i see...if you had a perfectly functioning 4S, then you should have waited for 6 instead of paying freight for 5. You never told me who your carrier was...and how you could just pay freight for all your phones.

I will enjoy my 5S...but you're using a cheap tactic to deter from your lack of knowledge in the area despite your IT background. I love it. Hey, why don't you argue some more about CORE COUNT and GHz making a better phone?!! I love to hear the BS from your mouth! Why would anyone who only needs a phone care about core counts and GHz??? Oh wait, you do care...just lying thru your teeth now!

It's Apple marketing Bro' Science. Clock speed, additional cores, and a better GPU are far more important on a phone.

I am surprise that you are still with Apple...seeing that you love core counts, Ghz, and a big screen for your OmniFocus! Since you really don't use a smartphone for anything else (like iTunes or pictures), why are you still with Apple?? Or simply, you're lying your way out of this argument!

What a joke dude! You're making excuses after excuses. IT guy who does not know a damn thing about cores and Ghz...now, that is just scary! What facts have you brought to the table except your BS spew about core counts and GHz?!
