The bulb in my ARB bull bar's right light surround that is used for day time running light and turn signal blew. When I went to replace it I discovered that the bulb had melted a hole in the housing and was also starting to melt the amber lens.
The light surround has two bulbs in it, a small one with a white lens and a larger one with the orange lens. After exchanging a number of emails with ARB it was determined that the orange side of the light surround was designed to be used only as a turn signal and not as a day time running light. However, the instructions state to connect up both the white and orange sides of the light surround to the 4Runner's combination day time running light/turn signal.
This is obviously a case of ARB reusing a component on the 4Runner to replace the existing light functionality without taking in to account how the 4Runner uses a combination light. The solution from ARB was to either replace the large bulb used behind the orange lens with the same smaller bulb used behind the white lens or to replace the orange lens bulb with a cooler LED.
I replaced the orange lens bulb with the smaller bulb that the white side uses but with replacing the orange side with a smaller bulb it has reduced the light output of the day time running light by at least half. I'm going to order a pair of 1156 LED bulbs for the orange side to hopefully get the light output back to stock while running a cooler solution that won't melt the housing.
ARB has replaced both housing on my truck under warranty. Anyone who is running an ARB bull bar should check their light surround to verify that they aren't starting to melt now that it's summer and/or look at replacing the existing 1156 style bulb behind the orange lens.
