Are my temps too high?

Just bought a bluetooth obd2 adapter (bafx) and torque pro. Pretty awesome setup if the numbers are legit.

Assuming the numbers are good, my tranny and coolant temps are both around 210f max after highway speeds.

I looked up some threads on the forum here and most people with b&m coolers are under 200f even if towing on the tranny fluid.

Thats pretty amazing, but back to my truck which doesnt have an external cooler. Are my temps okay or at a dangerous level?

So it that after you have been driving and shut the truck off? Or while you are driving?

While you are driving I would imagine the coolant (engine) temp to be around 195 (assuming you have that t stat in.

But I would also think your tranny temps would be a touch higher because that's kinda liquid to liquid cooling.

Both trans and coolant seem a little high for highway driving, unless you are going up and through hills as well. I'm constantly monitoring my scanguage while driving and notice that my coolant temp is usually steady @ 193f, unless I start climbing hills, then it rises to high '90s before coming back down.

I have a Hayden (TRD) trans cooler that has significantly brought the trans temp down to anywhere from 120's-150's during normal driving. Prior to the external cooler, it was running 180's and higher, especially when going through mountains. I believe pre-cooler I got it to 215-220sh climbing up some steep grade, which made me decide to pull the trigger on the external cooler.

If you have any bit of concern, or even just for the extra insurance and piece of mind, get an external trans cooler. I got mine, Hayden 678 (TRD model) for $45 @ O'Reilly Auto and spent an hour or two installing it. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Thanks shoot/hawiaan. These temps are while driving highway speeds. Some parts of the highways here in CO are hilly, but the ones im on arent too steep.

Do you have to bypass the tranny cooler in the radiator when you do an external, or could you use both?

No worries. As far as whether to bypass or not, this subject has been heavily debated and is 50/50 on the answer. Some do it, others don't, and they both have their benefit. Bypassing it will prevent the possibility of the whole pink milkshake thing. Leaving the radiator cooler in line will assist with warming the transmission up faster, given the two fluids will "touch."

I don't want to bypass. I put in a brand new radiator in regards to the milkshake. I assume the external cooler would just be stuck in between the tranny lines and the radiator if you aren't going to bypass.

The new radiator is definitely a good preventative measure. If you aren't going to bypass the radiator, simply use the supplied hoses that come with the cooler and hook it up in line with the radiator cooler.
Trans > Cooler > Radiator > Trans. I can't remember if I put the cooler before or after the radiator, but you can look that up since it's been debated as well.

Mine coolant temp is around 198-205 normal city/highway driving. I don't think 210 is anything to be scared of. It is a little on the higher side, but shouldn't cause any problems. If you start seeing it get higher though I'd look into it further.

what's your tranny temp?

my temp is almost always 210-211 once warmed up. never seen it any higher but it definitely isn't in the 190s like some people.

fairly certain that my radiator is original so that could have something to do with it (~205k miles)

I want to say it fluctuates a lot.. I think once I get going on the interstate it gets up to 180's -190's. Around town I'd say 140's-170's. However, I have seen it get into the 200's and 210's if I've been on the interstate for a while. This is all just recollection. I can't remember exactly.

Here's what I run, via Scanguage II.

HWY Engine: 190-193.
HWY Transmission: 140-145.

I've recently had the timing belt/wp done, as well as new Denso Radiator and B&M70264. The radiator was bypassed with the new transmission cooler.

Manual trans so I can't comment on the tranny temp. However my coolant temp is anywhere from 193-205, also I think it is original radiator with ~210,000
Was quoted 430 to have dealership replace, not to shabby, so it's getting replaced soon.

Check the fan clutch, and check for belt slippage. Also, see if the t-stat juggle valve is in the 6 o'clock position; this seems to cause a lot of warmer running issues, I think most shops just install it at the 12 o'clock, but for some reason our trucks want 6 o'clock.

It's not "too" hot, but it may be a little warmer than it should be given the time of year and such.

You should do it yourself. That is pretty expensive.

This was the case initially for me. Jiggle valve installed at 12 o'clock, and I was running 204-206. Jiggle reinstalled at 6 o'clock position and now runs 190-191. Big difference.

Trust me I would love to do it myself, nothing boils my blood more then paying someone to do easy maintenance for me. However, I'm looking at my second back surgery in as many years and just not able to do it. I think 500 isn't too bad considering it's at a stealership and I think the radiator is 210

I just had a brand new OEM radiator put in as well as OEM fan clutch with a full system flush and it currently averages 204. I use to see 196-198 all the time. The timing belt and water pump were done less than 10k ago and everything done at the dealership. I don't think anything is wrong with your temps. If the needle on the gauge is still pointing slightly downwards everything is fine.

Man that's good to know thanks!!

I think the thing that bothers me the most is the fluctuation of the temp. 196-205 isn't much I guess but it only hits the high mark when in 5th gear just cruising on the freeway rpm's at around 2200 rpm I throw it into 4th and 2700 rpm's and drops within minutes to 196 ...just seems weird to me I guess I should check engine load next time, that might help me out. All readings from ultra gauge
