Are the front side and rear window coated?

I have always wanted to know what is on my 2002 4Runner windows. They have repeled water from the first day. Are they treated from the factory? If so, with what? Can I hurt them if I use a glass polish? Only the front side and tail gate windows seem to be treated.

Any info would be great.

this is a great question...I have a 2005 and I've always used RainX on my vehicles...and the front side windows, rear window, and even the rear view mirrors seem to just "smudge around" the rainx...with the windshield and rear side windows, the rainx goes on with no problem

I know on the 4the gens the side front windows, side mirrors are treated. Its called Hydrophyllic glass. Do a search and you'll see that its been discussed before. Toyota also says the 4th gens front windshield has the coating, but I call shenanigans because it doesn't work.

I didn't realize that it was on the 3rd gens too.

It says in the manual to not use anything on the windows like rainx.

The windshield of mine was very noticeably coated compared to my pitted 3rd GEN but it did not last more than a few weeks. It was pretty amazing while it was there. My side and rear glass is still just like new. Rain-X brought back the same effect on my windshield. Rain-X will not stick to the other glass.

Only the back glass "seemed" to be coated on my 3rd GEN.

Yea, it's been like that since it was new in 2002, still repels water like crazy. Just wondering what it is, and if it can be harmed with glass plolish or claybar.

It's been on 4runners for a long time...not exactly since when. My '02 4runner had it...i love it. I would NOT put anything on it...you can destroy the coating permanently.

Nope...gone. I downsized to only one car right now, G500.
