ArkMaster Build Thread

I'm actually buying a corolla for a DD. Gotta get that 35 mpg :bat:
I am wanting a first gen though and after some thinking, I may do that. Now the only issue with that is I don't think I can justify owning 3 vehicles. A DD, a mildly built weekend warrior, than a trail rig. So I don't know what i'll do yet cuz I really don't want to sell the 3rd gen.

Do the math - 35 MPG is nice, but how much will that save you a month over the 18 MPG you're getting now? How much will the Corolla cost (include interest, if you're financing it, and full insurance)? How long will the money you're saving on gas take to bring you to the breakeven point on the Corolla? Buying an additional car purely for better gas mileage is rarely a good financial move.

Maybe he's buying used for like $2000 :)

Exactly what I'm doing. Next month i'm picking up a beater cash in hand.

I drive roughly 300 miles a week. Gas itself, the car would pay itself off in just over a year. the runner would than be a secondary and a little cheaper. Also, i've had a few close calls with the runner and I want something that if I do something to the runner, I can still get to and from work. I almost rolled it 3 weeks ago  my buddy narrowly kept me from going over.

You willing to make a drive? He's going to sell it in about a month. I can get you the specs if you're interested. Pretty sure he'll take $5k for it.

I don't have those funds right now. or I totally would! Thank you though!

Lately my build won't let me post. It gives me the message "Please use 4 or more characters" or whatever. I'm posting a lot more than that, so if this posts, i'll be a little surprised.

I bought some more goodies for the runner. This may be the last of them for a while, but regardless, i get to acquire a full set of skids before winter comes up. Last thing I need is to slide off a rock onto something important

Also, I still need to replace all my tie rod ends, my belts, and trim up my fenders. As my Icons loosen up a little in the front, i'm noticing a lot my rubbing at full stuff... I'm going wheeling Saturday so I should be able to see exactly how much I need to trim, but odds are i'll trim about 1 1/2" off the front, as well as take as much off the rear as possible. I'll also get to cut my bumper to do that, as I have already worn off the paint on the ends from rubbing. After all this, maybe i'll even get around to installing the rest of the parts pile I have sitting around. Should be a productive month.

FWIW I've gotten emails saying that you've replied with the word "test" as the body of the post. I've also gotten the same error message.

Looking forward to seeing pics of all your parts and work. I need to get some skids too.

Yeah, I typed that to see if I could get anything to post. You know, Test, test the system. 4 character word. etc. It posted, but I went to edit it and it wouldn't work. Oh well, important thing is that it works now.:guitar3:

As promised, trip report:

The trip started really well. Short story is 1 3rd gen, 2 1st gens, 1 tacoma, 3 80s pickups, and 1 broken jeep.
3 rollovers, 2 different vehicles, and a very good time.

So myself and several other rigs headed up rattlesnake and constrictor near 5 mile pass. The first major obstacle was a very tight squeeze in a rock garden. Of course, the cages pickup, flew through, but the jeep tried to follow. That didn't work it to well, and, I'll let the pictures do the talking.

He broke down and quickly turned back after we fixed it.
On that same obstacle, the 1st gen runner to his turn. He tried to take the "impossible line". We have never seen it done, but you have to mount the wall and take your front end around the Boulder, and brig the read end over, hopefully without rolling. If not for his crossmember, he would have made it

I went through the tight squeeze line, though quickly backtracked. I could have easily made it, however, I would have need some new passenger doors.... Along the way I had to get some posers and group shots

The next obstacle is a small climb with multiple ledges. Only the 1st gen made it up, the next closest one had his first flop/roll. Unfortunately I didn't get the flop on video, but my buddy did so I'll get that and post it soon.
After the flip:

He ended up doing a 3/4 roll from the top of the ledge. The toolbar in the back and his lightbar saved the truck. No major damage. He had some damage to the fenders and shattered his windshield.
The runner than made it up with a little effort.
Again, I attempted, but after one flop on the climb, no front locker, and the fact that everybody I wheel with has a SFA and 37s, I decided to take the bypass after starting to hop on my way up.
The path to the next obstacle is a small hill climb with amazing scenery.

When we arrived at Wayne's World, Austin jumped right in. After many attempts to get up the first muddy ledge, we piled some rocks and got him up. With how wet it was, we ended up pulling him up the second half.

At that point, the runner went for it. After flopping twice, being pushed, pulled, and I literally mean we had 8 guys pull him up with a tow strap by hand, he finally made it up.

My buddies pickup (bobbed, dovetailed, caged, on 1 tons) made quick work of it, twice, literally walking up it....
At this point, 8 hours passed and we turned around. At this point I learned I own a multi-purpose rock-crawle/prerunner because apparently, I was hauling down the fire roads and was getting air, so that was cool.
All in all, it was a good day. No injuries, good times, with good people.

Ty and I both have dings on the passenger side from that rock in the garden that scared you off. If you get just the right line the first time you can clear it with just 33s and a rear locker, but if you have to start backing and jockeying around it'll get you every time.

Yeah, I was trying to go through them, so next time i think i'll go more driver on the left rock and that should assist a little more. Is that kind of the line you're thinking?

More driver before the left rock, then cut across. I think, anyway. I haven't made it through that garden clean yet, but I'm working on it. :D

Are you watching that pair of 4Runners I linked upthread? He's at $4500.

Haha. Thats the route I took, but it would have taken out passenger side doors, so I chose to wait.

I'm watching, but I'm at least a month out from being able to purchase anything. There was a 1st gen on KSL, linked front and rear, just needed the links installed. $1000. Wife was selling her divorced husbands rig from the sounds :D

That one's been for sale for a while now. It's pretty but I wonder how well it actually wheels.

That's what I'm wondering. If I were to purchase it, I would ditch the glass the and bedsides. Turn it into a truggy. There was a linked 1st gen on ksl for $1000, caged and all. Looked like an ex-wife getting rid of her ex-husbands toy ahaha. I was pissed cuz it was only online 1 day before it sold. I was going to go buy it cash......

Well yesterday I started on something I've been putting off. Yesterday I began clearancing my fenders. I followed crazydubman lead to accommodate my fender flares. I started on my driver side. And of course since I'm doing new mods, that's means new toys

$90 at Home Depot and 3 year warranty.
First thing I did was remove the black plastic piece that keeps everything from kicking up in the wheel well. I then went to remove the flares, which was a SOB. Especially the end screws.
c568e5f1847ef90f244caffe3aa42d1a.jpg

I ended up hammering them out after using wire cutters to cut the rubber off holding it in place. The flare then came off. The rest of the tabs were easily removed.

This was cleaned up, then with the assistance of Goo be Gone, cleaned her up nice and pretty.
c75774b321d6e21f8384e712b061da4d.jpg

Next, I taped a line to roughly follow. I kept about a 3/4" spacing between the holes and where I cut. All together I cut about 1 1/2" to 2" off.

This end part was a pita to get at with the grinder. i ended up cutting horizontal strips, slowly stripped them off, and the last one, I got to bend until it broke off with plyers.
f39201091baee8682caa8f9dde1c7f3d.jpg

I than removed the tape and used 100 grit sandpaper blocks and a metal file(for the gnarlier stuff). It worked out well and smoothed out pretty easily.
Next came the trimming of the actual fender flare. This part was easy. Just used the grinder to cut off the bottom part. Simple enough

And the trimmings
5666a84db2052c5a18c27407fd13ce1c.jpg

After sanding everything down on the actual fender, I reinstalled the flare using 3/4" long, 1/4" hex bolt screws. I used 1-2 washers on each depending on the location and if they fit, I then used normal nuts to finish it off with some blue loctite. However, the end 2 bolts didn't match with the holes. Rather than drill wholes, I used 2 zip ties for each, just in case.

After that, I coated her with 3 coats of rustoleum self etching primer, followed by 3 coats of AVT matte black rollbar paint.
And the finished product:

Yesterday all I got finished was the driver side, the passenger will be done soon as well. I do still get to add the black plastic piece back to catch mud to avoid it going into the door jam and engine bay. It will be good to see what I come up with for that. Will post pictures when I'm done.
Thanks for reading :llama:

Can anybody give me any ideas of what might be going in with my e-brake?
Context: I was wheeling in the rain, mud, and snow, when I found myself in a situation where I got to back up. I was hitting my rear axle, and suddenly, I could not pull my e-brake. I literally cannot budge it from the down (off) position. I quickly narrowed the possibility of it being stuck on off because I felt no resistance driving and the light wasn't on. That also quickly cut the possibility of a bent bracket out, as that would pull the wire tight and trigger the light. well, it's muddy, so I get out and when I get to a spot I can check it out, I still see nothing. So I go home. I wash the mud off and I find this on my driver rear, right under my panhard mount.

It's safe to say that's not right. Can anybody tell me what cable this is? And possibly provide a picture of yours so I can see where the mount is supposed to be? Thank you!

So the bad news is, I get to tear apart my e brake lines from interior to exterior. Good news is, my birthday present from myself: part 1 came in the mail today

Thanks Gerdo should have it painted by the weekend :girl:
