AssBurns 2000 Limited Build Thread

I thought the same thing when I was almost maxed out on my 48" jack. If I go to the 60" jack, I won't be able to use my current mounting setup.

I can relate to that, I have the 60 inch because I got it for free and it is a pain because the only place it really fits is the roof

I've been doing a lot of brainstorming on rear spring options with my current weight when loaded up wheeling, as I'm doing a outboarded rear hoop in the coming months. I'm running 890's with stock bumper for now, but know at some point I'd like to add a swingout bumper in the future, which complicates my future spring options because it affects ride height, total spring length when flexed/ drooped, spring rate, etc. I like my relatively low ride height but don't like riding so close to my bumps since they've been extended 3" with the Wheelers Superbump's added length on top of that, and being loaded down only makes that worse until I can get the shocks outboarded for the compressed length to not mess everything up in that regard. The longer 5th gen 5100's I'm running are almost 15" compressed, which in conjunction with the stock shock mounting, sucks balls. Hope that all makes sense.

I will be retaining my stock sway bar with extended links for DD road manners, which also acts as a limit strap. Are you getting that droop travel by running no sway bar? Are your rear upper/ lower arms the limiting factor? The low profile rear bumper you made makes the droop travel look even more dramatic lol.

Been following your build for a while, not sure why I haven't stopped by to comment until now! :hello:

Dezert4Runner Sounds like you got the basics figured out on what your gonna do, besides coils. Depending how much weight you really carry, you could look into the 861’s once you get a tire carrier. I always try to pack as light as possible so weight isn’t a huge issue for me yet. I need to figure out spare tire and fuel mounting solution though. I don’t really want a swing out tire carrier but I can’t thing of a better option at this point. Are you planning to mount your bump stops in stock location or will you be keeping your extensions? That’s one thing I love about how I set mine up since I didn’t need bump extensions, I can keep a lower ride height without hitting bumps all the time. I would highly recommend trying to keep as much up travel as possible.

I’m not running any sway bars anymore. My limiting factor is my shocks right now. I am only running 3 of the 4 links with the panhard bar. Even with upgraded links with Johnny Joints at all ends, the 4th link puts a lot of stress at full droop. I’m currently only running the passenger side upper link so it doesn’t bind and moves in a similar fashion to the panhard bar at full droop. Now it doesn’t bind at all.

Took a trip out to Anza-Borrego and Ocotillo Wells this weekend with MACT4R 85straight Oneluv13T4R UnJeep & 2barevo. I only made it out for Saturday and Sunday but some of the guys were able to make it out Friday as well. The 2 days I was out there, I logged 85 miles of offroading. We started Saturday off at Arroyo Salado Campground next to S-22. From there we headed down to 5 Palms, then checked out the Pumpkin Patch, then shot down Tule Wash to Hwy 86. Followed along the 86 for a few minutes till we hit Campbell Wash to Gas Domes, then to Artesian Well. After that we hauled ass down Pole Line rd to Split Mountain and followed along the RR tracks till we hit Fish Creek. At that point we had a Jeep get a pinhole leak in his radiator, so he and UnJeep decided to head home since we couldn’t really fix it on the trail easily. So we parted ways and continued on up Fish Creek Wash to Sandstone Canyon where we made camp for the night. We made dinner then enjoyed some beers at the campfire while we had our shenanigans of catching Kangaroo Rats and being reckless with some bottle rockets (Thanks JBurt!!) I had Mac running for his life a couple times hahah.
Sunday morning we made breakfast and headed back down Sandstone Canyon to Fish Creek Wash then made our way up Diablo Drop Off trail to Arroyo Tapiado. We checked out the Mud Caves for a while and enjoyed the cool shade that they had to offer. After that we finished our trip at S-2 where we aired up, took a few pics then parted ways. Definitely a trip for the books. We had a blast and I am definitely looking forward to our next trip out.

Some pics from the trip

Right before this trip I finally purchased a handheld HAM radio. Ended up with a BaoFeng UV-5R+. I always hate things just sitting in my lap or in the cup holders, so I came up with a very simple solution. A washer, a magnet and some 3M double sided tape. It worked great all weekend with no issues and was extremely convenient.

You are definitely right, there is no way I'll be losing a coil at full flex, but my rear axle ends up at full droop more than it really should. The last thing I want is my coil unseating as my axle is fully off the ground then landing with the coil unseated. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Granted, my coils don't just fall out at this point but give it a few months and they will sag even further to the point they will fall out. Just trying to figure the situation out ahead of time before this happens

I had this exact thing happen to me in Calico
The only thing that kept it from completely coming out was the brake line little tab bracket ...
Drove all the way home then did my usual trail damage undercarriage inspection
And this is what I find ..

That probably happened when I was telling you how much you were flexing without that shock in there. Your tire dropped way down!

Did a couple little things today. Fixed my back window. There was a wire that was getting caught on the window, causing the window to only be able to roll half way down. That’s fixed with a few zip ties. Pulled the light bulbs for the Low Fuel and ABS lights since they both serve no purpose these days. Also hammered out part of that dent from when my brother rear ended me earlier this year. I was going to try to fix the rest of the area that was damaged so I can finally replace my broken tail light. Unfortunately I couldn’t get to the damaged area to push it out. Gonna have to take it to a body shop.
Also gave to BeerRunner a quick wash while I was at it.

Also got some limit straps put on up front. Hopefully I won’t be breaking shocks anymore.

So I’ve only been able to use 2wd since early November. Took me a little while to diagnose the issue. I was out in Ocotillo with some friends and broke a CV axle. Typically it’s not a big deal. I swapped axles and within a few hundred feet the new axle broke (on flat ground by the way). So I just decided to pull the axle shaft and plug the ends for the rest of the weekend. I thought maybe the brand new axle was bad from the factory. I get home and buy a new axle, and swap it out. I notice the angle of the CV seems to be more extreme than normal. Didn’t quite pay that much attention to it though. Drive it to the trail a couple hours later with no issues. The first obstacle my CV breaks again. Pull it and plug the ends again. Finished the trail in 2wd. Only had to get pulled once [emoji1303]. Next day I get under and inspect the diff. Everything spins fine but I noticed the passenger side was sitting about an inch higher than the drivers side. I though, maybe the mount is bent. After work the next day I went to the junk yard and bought new mounts. Pop em in and still sitting higher on the passenger side. Then I noticed that the ADD tube actually hit the oil pan and just barely put a dent in it. Then I knew the ADD had to be bent. Luckily Caleb (don’t remember hit forum name) had an extra laying around. Swapped it in today and now the diff is sitting level like it’s supposed to. Still haven’t test it out yet but all looks good! Stoked to hopefully have 4wd again!

Also got a winch installed. My dad bought a new Jeep that already had a nice Warn winch on it. He told me if I buy a winch for his old Jeep I can have the winch that was on it. It’s a Warn VR-10,000s. Only 2 years old with a synthetic line and Factory 55 Pro-Link. Found a winch for $200 and swapped it out. Not the worst deal. Had to pull my KC lights off to put the winch in since the mounting tabs for the light were in the way. I’ll redo those this coming week hopefully. I also mounting the controller box under the hood on the firewall.

Old ADD tube. Slightly bent.

That'd be me! I'm not on here much anymore though, but just popped on to actually show a friend how you did your rear bumper, then saw this.
Good to hear it corrected it!

Sorry to hear about the 4wd troubles man. Glad to see that it is (hopefully) on its way to being fixed. Were you going hard train when it broke? It sounds like no. Especially Octotillo when is pretty tame over all. Strange to break there.

I was playing around in the notches. Wasn’t doing anything too crazy but it wasn’t something that my friends were willing to attempt. They we just being boring though. I wasn’t going fast just a steep rutted notch.

Unfortunately my problem isn’t completely fixed. My ADD tube was definitely bent but my CV axle broke again as I pulled out of the driveway in AWD. It’s definitely something in my front diff. What’s weird is my front diff doesn’t have any binding when turning by hand. I do feel a slight resistance at a certain point but it’s not all that noticeable. The plan now is to pull the front diff and check it out. If the front diff is bad, I would be doing gears and front locker but I’m not going to fix it or put it back in. I’m not willing to invest more or money into the IFS. If it really is the diff thats the issue I have a couple ideas. Of course SAS is always an option but I really would like to have the Go-Fast comfort and control of IFS. So at this point I am strongly considering swapping a TTB Dana 44 front end from a Bronco.

Have you seen anyone do that conversion on a 3rd gen? It'd be a pretty big undertaking. Getting rid of the rack and pinion and getting a steering box to fit might be the biggest issue I can see.

It’s really no different than a SAS, but instead of a solid axle, I’ll be whoop scissors. I’m not really ready to do anything just yet but I’ll start finding parts and rocking 2wd for a while. Still not 100% sure what the problem is but I really hate the idea of putting any money into the IFS. It’s always been a weak link and I’ve babied it for so long that I’m ready to ditch it for something better. Never seen it done before on a 4runner but I’ve seen it on a couple XJ’s. It’s not anything I can’t do, it’s more of time and money at the moment. The cool thing though is I can find a donor Bronco for a few hundred bucks and have full width axles that match lug patterns and width. Probably will be cheaper than SAS too.

I'ts not a 44 but, Front Range Off-Road has put a 4th gen 8" high pinion in a 3rd gen. They built a custom intermediate tube and shaft. The Strength is great and you don't have to mess with the steering. It is a really nice combo with their long travel they are developing. The run 37's and wheel hard. Just another option to throw out there.

This 1996 Toyota 4Runner Proves IFS Doesn?t Have to Be Weak

While that 4runner is really cool, it still doesn’t quite match what a D44 TTB could take. The 8” front end doesn’t seem like a really big upgrade for the amount of work it would take. Plus building 2” over arms would be quite the project without CAD. The added width of the Bronco axles will be a huge benefit in itself. With the TTB done right you can pretty easily get 16” of clean, usable wheel travel. Plus it’ll be way stronger than the current IFS front end could ever be. Still doing my research but I think this is the way I’m going to go. Still have to buy a new daily driver before I can take on a new project like this.

Went out to Ocotillo Wells/Truckhaven again for this New Years weekend. Pretty fun but super dusty since there hasn’t been rain down here in months then throw a busy weekend in the mix. There is so much fun stuff to explore even after being out there dozens of times in the last few years, it’s still always something new. Logged a little over 100 miles of dirt which was fun, especially since there was quite a bit of slow pace stuff in the hills and canyons. After talking to a couple buddies about the possibilities of a TTB swap, a few of them tried to convince me to just get a Bronco. I considered selling the 4runner and doing that since it already has the axles and v8, but after this weekend I knew I couldn’t go that route due to the body width. We found some pretty fun narrow sections that a full width vehicle would have had a real tough time. Makes me remember why I got a 4runner in the first place.

Right before the trip I needed to mount my offroad lights. I had to cut the old light tabs off because my winch was in the way. I made a quick bar mount out of some 3/4” tube and some plate. Turned out pretty good for a last minute rushed project. I also swapped out the middle lights for some 7” HID’s that my dad gave me. They work pretty good so I’ll probably end up keeping them on.

For those of you that haven’t been out to Truckhaven on New Years, there is a group that builds a multi story tree house every year and party in it throughout the week. Then on New Year’s Eve they stuff it full of Christmas trees and mortar fireworks. At midnight they light it up for the desert to enjoy. It’s quite the sight to see.
