ATF cooler and roof rack question

Been reading for awhile and decided to join. I have 2 questions about my 97.

1. I started the ATF cooler install last night. My question is, why can't I just get a connector and join the old hoses up with some new hoses to connect the cooler? Seems simple, but in the writeups everyone seems to route new hose to the transmission.

2. Mine didn't come with a roof rack, but there is a plastic strip that would be were it attachs. Is there an aftermarket rack made that just attaches?

1. You can, but I wouldn't. The hose on your 97 is now 17 years old, and I wouldn't want to splice it together with a brand new hose. Just another failure point IMO.

2. I think your only option is to get factory rails if you want to use the factory mounting locations. You can get factory rails and then get some Yakima mounts that fit in the rails. There are many racks available that will mount into our factory channels.
 
You can use 3/8 barb union fittings to connect the new to old hose but your truck is 17 years old. So your hose is also 17 years old. It's not hard to cut the old hose off the metal lines at the front axle, they don't run rubber hose all the way back to the trans. It's a tight space but it's doable which is why so many of us have just replaced the hose altogether.

Search on here for a rack. There's a member whitsonmetalworks I think is his name and he makes racks.
 
Dang, it is 17 years old! I've only had it a year. Has 107,000 miles on it and runs perfect. Previous owner was a old guy who had all service done at a Toyota dealership. Even has a new Toyota battery in it and new Michilin tires from the Toyota dealership. Hate to think how much he spent in maintance on it.

Normal routine maintenance costs less in the long run!

Yes Whitson Metal Works makes an aftermarket rack that connects to the factory channels. He was running a special on these but I think it just ended.

Go to a junk yard and find a runner with a rack. Take it all off, and fit it on your truck... Will mount up. The mounting locations are under those plastic strips on your roof. This is what I did.... Enjoy the new wheels!
 
I need to replace the trans cooler lines too, I just spliced them with unions, how many feet of line is needed to do both lines to a cooler in front of the condensor?
 
I mounted an aftermarket rack onto the rails directly. I used the stock flat pieces across the roof to keep the rack from rubbing, and the stock mounting clips that go inside the rail to mount the rack. The mounting clips use a M6 bolt from what I remember. Here's a couple pics (not the greatest) but I think it will give you an idea...


 
Come to think of it.. I'll sell you my factory rack since I installed my aftermarket WMM I have this sitting on my side yard. Pm me.
