I have a 96 T4R and I have ordered a B&M 70268 cooler that will arrive in a few days. I planned to install the cooler and bypass the radiator. How would you mount an electric fan in front of the trans cooler and still keep the cooler and the fan centered on the condenser with that vertical bar in the way? Or would you move the cooler off to the left and mount the electric fan centered on the trans cooler?

Mine isn't centered, rather it is off to the passenger side.
Depending on your driving style, where you live, if you tow things, etc. a single cooler might be fine. However, If you don't have the ability to monitor your trans. temps then I would recommend that you run 2 coolers just to be safe. Like others have said, we are playing with the engineering of the vehicle, it is always ok to err on the side of caution, especially when dealing with a high dollar item such as a transmission. If you go through my build thread (specifically HERE) You will see that I originally had it mounted WAY in front of the A/C condenser with a fan on it. I had to re-locate it due to my winch-mount bumper install. I currently have not re-installed the fan, but rather I have it mounted up against the condenser. I will see how that works out, add the fan if necessary.

Going to get the trans flushed this week in preparation for a trip in a couple weeks towing a Fleetwood E1... We'll see how she does.

Thanks for all the info guys. I finally made it to Houston and most of the time the trans temp was 185 but it went as high as 230 on some big hills. I had the 4runner packed full of stuff and the weather was almost always over 95+ outside if that makes a difference. I will post a pic of how the cooler is mounted so you guys can tell me if it's right. I will defiantly have to look into the B&M cooler here soon. Thanks again guys!

what's your temps in the winter on start up and going down the passes? also why and the heck haven't we met up yet so i can check out your rig? lol...it's probably because I'm "that guy" huh... hahha

Ok guys a little update I had been driving around here in Houston for a couple days now and the trans temps have been around 175-195. I have been thinking of getting a new trans cooler here soon so which one would you guys recommend, the 70268 or 70264? I plan on getting a small 5x10 trailer when I pickup big items I can't fit in the 4runner.

the 70268 is only 3/4" thick. Get the 70264 which is 1.5" thick and if you bypass the radiator get two coolers.

Hey guys I am about to order a B&M 70264 trans cooler off amazon and I noticed there is on that is 14,400 BTUs and then there is a super cooler that is rated at 24,000 BTUs. Would the 24,000 one be too much for my 4runner? I do a lot of city driving and will tow every once in awhile.

I tried squeezing a bigger cooler in there, but there just wasn't enough room. I installed the 70264 in series with the radiator cooler and my temps run from 130-160.

The 24k one is only a 1/4" taller than the 14K cooler so they are roughly the same size

I didn't know there was such a thing as "too much" when it comes to the trans coolers. But if there is, then I'd just get the 14K one. I've never heard of anyone anywhere say the 70264 wasn't enough for them.

Let me know if you need any help installing it. I installed mine with fuel hose, and I've been meaning to replace it with transmission hose. Got 25 feet sitting in my closet. Just need to find the time to install it.
