ATF sump capacity and dipstick question...

...the ongoing saga of my 97 V^ continues, I have the B&M cooler installed and tomorrow will be doing the full tranny flush.

I neglected to measure what came out of the sump since it was draining for several months while life got in the way, I read that about 6.5 qts. should be right. How high over the "HIGH" mark on the ATF dipstick can I go and still be safe? I will be draining the old fluid as it comes out of the tranny and before the B&M cooler, figured why put that old stuff through the cooler. I plan to take it down a qt at a time and refill until I get clean ATF and then connect it to the B&M cooler and top off.

And speaking of the ATF dipstick, I had a bear of a time getting it out and then I couldn't get it back in. It looked like the dipstick had 2 twists in it. I'm not sure if they were from the former owners abuse or if they are put there during manufacturing to help with the turns and bends in the dipstick tube.

I straightened them out the best I could and was able to monkey the dipstick back in properly.

Are those twists in the dipstick intentional? If so I should probably get a replacement...

thanks,

Those are intentional. If the dipstick doesn't go in, rotate it 90 degrees and try it again until it goes in. You kind of master it after a while.

Seems like the dip stick rotates about 90° from insert to bottom. Pay attention to the angle of the handle when seated and just about out…this should be a 90° twist. Re-insert the same way…

Shaping the tip or trying to straighten does little. I heard some guys cut it off at the cold mark but I think it's just the way the tube is and cutting not make a difference.

I did the same thing you are and had that thing in and out 50 times it seemed and now can do it effortlessly.

Sorry I don't recall the capacities.

I took the easier way.

I drained it. Then filled it.

Next off stretch I did it again.

I will drain one last time and drop pan, clean magnets and change filter.

Today after getting front of engine back together from a timing belt kit install I installed a trans cooler and magnefine filter in the cooler line when I got done.

I used generic dexIII from advanced auto. When I'm done ill use Pennzoil multi vehicle as my primary fill.
