Any ideas on how ripping the cat out altogether would affect the smell?

I love that smell, wouldn't fix it if I could But if I ever go for the fix it would be at 79K miles just before before the emissions warranty ran out. That way I would get new stuff when my old stuff might need a replacement.

Well, it's as easy as cutting out all the cats and having mid pipe(s) fabbed up to the catback ever is.....

I didn't say it was a simple solution, I was asking what the likely outcome would be, or if anyone has had it done

are they serious about "96 months or 80,000 miles" statement in the TSB? if so, you got a great idea ;-)

when i called the stealership up today after reading the TSB, they said tsb is not a recall - so i'd need to bring to bring the truck in for diag. i know they're what's coming - oh no, it's really the gas ... what should be my strategy if i need the tsb done?

tsb == technical service bulletin.
it should definitely be free if they agree to perform the tsb for you.

Unlike a recall customers are NOT notified of TSB's. You will have to go and point out that you know there is one and you actually have to have the problem for it to be fixed. They still may play dumb so go prepared with the tsb number. Again if you don't have the problem they won't do anything.

Anyone have a copy of the V8 TSB? I went to Alldata but nothing is listed for either the V6 or the V8. I want to see if mine falls within the Vin#'s.

it seems people are saying the one for v8 hasnt come out - so you wont find it, yet.
maybe toyota recvd more complaint from v6 owners or maybe toyota's rolling this tsb out in steps, v6 then v8.

Your last statement is probably the truth. Toyota sells more V6 models, so they'll probably take care of them first. Thats what they did with the 2003-2004 Sulfur TSB...

If I'm reading the posts right, there hasn't been one issued for the V8 yet, only the V6.
I am also waiting for one to be issued for the V8, mine downright STINKS!!!

I get a lot of comments from people saying "Is that from your truck?" I have to say yeah there is a notice out for the repair. I always have my A/C on so I don't smell it until I park and get out of my truck.

Nothin better then the smell after you took a good shit, why you want to change it? If you have it fixed then you won't be able to blame the 4runner anymore for that smell that comes out of you at the wrong time during a date.
