Auto Dimming Mirror with Compass and Thermometer Installation

Unfortunately toyota/lexus mirrors have autodimming feature but no compass or temperature display. All the mirrors I have are only in black color (Gentex mirrors).
I do not think the paint will fate as the back side of the mirror is not terribly exposed to sun. Make sure the paint is from DuPont or some good brand.

So just FYI, my 'Mirror Mounting Button' has held up well, I put it through a fairly rigorous vibration / impact test yesterday on the trail, no issues. you MUST clean the mounting surface with something that'll leave ZERO residue, i used a blue shop towel and brake cleaner, the box recommends rubbing alcohol, but only the little more expensive Isopropyl alcohol will not leave a residue, the cheap stuff is something like 30% water or something like that. then let the adhesive setup for 24 hours! I'm very happy with the results! now if only i could get a semi-accurate outside temp reading... lol had to move it again since engine heat was still getting to it when i was stopped.

I did this mod about two years ago. One of the best mods I've done. The GM mirror is a little bit bigger than the stock Toyota one, but it fits nicely between the two sun visors with no fitment issues.
I did not paint mine, but a buddy painted his tan to match his interior...it has not fade. But to be honest, you should mount it first to see what it looks like before painting! I was going to paint mine also...but once it was installed, the black looked so good I left it.
I went to a wrecking yard...paid $45 for the mirror/wiring/temp. Buddy and I took our time routing and soldering my wires. Took couple hours...the only trouble I had was getting the mounting piece it stick to my windshield. I bought one of those "glue kits" at NAPA...didn't work. NAPA gave me my money back. I ended up going to a glass repair shop...told them what I was doing...they went out and glued it on for free!

Really? I had an 05 Tundra that had autodimming, compass/temp display that came with it from the dealership. Would even flash ICE warning when temps dropped below 38F. It was black but then so was the rest of the interior.
Who knows? Maybe they used the same setup you did. I will have to inquire at the dealership about this.

update, so the adhesive on the mounting button didn't last, droooled off the windshield yesterday in~85 degree heat. I decided to skip the "mirror adhesive" stuff (just super glue with a different label is what i think it is) and go straight to hardcore 2 part epoxy, 1,500 LB strength per square inch on the label, convenient since i estimate about a square inch is the plate size of the button. stuck it on the window (with blue painters tape all around to mitigate runs and smears) and we'll see how it goes!

Wow...good! Well not good...I feel for you with the glue issue, same happened to me. It just makes me feel a little bit more "normal" to know it wasn't just me. Really...I thought I was just an idiot, cause I couldn't make something designed to stick to a windshield...stick!!
I hope the epoxy work well for you...don't see how it won't! But then again...I never thought superglue wouldn't stick either.

I bought the mirror mount for GM vehicles (GM equipment usually so I thought a GM mount would work... WRONG) and ended up having to epoxy the correct mirror mount (Chrysler/VW) to the GM one that I couldn't get off the windshield. It's held great in the 95 degree heat so far!:thumb:

that button mount is now a permanent part of the windshield, but at 3.99$ I can buy another when the windshield needs replacing.

Bumping an old thread...
I picked up the same GM comp/temp mirror like the one featured above but the width is much bigger than stock which prevents the sun visors from fully opening. Did you guys off center the mirror or just live without fully extending the visors??

My mirror came from an '99 Tahoe and works great! The Sunvisors come very close to touching the mirror, but don't. I attempted to glue my own mirror on; however, the mirror kits I got at the local parts store all sucked!! I couldn't get any of them to work.
Therefore, I went to a glass shop and had them hang the mirror for me. A buddy of mine worked there And did it for free. To be honest...I have no idea if it's off center or not. But if it is...it's not by much. Now the back of the mirror on the driver's side is closer to the windshield than the back of the mirror on the passenger's side...so it's adjusted at an angle. Sitting at this angle makes the mirror "shorter" in between the Sunvisors. I hope I'm explaining this so you can understand what I'm attempting to explain??

Thanks good tip on adjusting the ball joints. I guess the drivers visor smacks the mirror.
Cheers Russell! I follow you on how the rear view angle makes the mirror "narrower" Can you post a pic of yours?
Below is my current set up. It's a Gentex with Homelink and a central roof mount. It smacks both visors:

I bought a GM one without measuring the width! Its the same as my original one. I have a set of 02 visors with Homelink so I won't lose that function if I proceed with the install.
Will likely have to offset it as the OP suggested so at least the passenger side visor fully opens.

I have to apologize...it's been crazy with the 4th going on. My 4Runner is over at our shop/garge right now. I'm In the process of installing a Supecharger and set of headers...and maybe rebuild the front end wih all new parts from Toyota?
Anyway...I really hadn't plan on going over to the shop until the weekend...but if you're wanting a picture...I'll try and get back over there in the next day or two.
