Auxillary fuel tank or larger tanks?

Does anyone know if a larger tank, or auxillary fuel tank is made to fit 5th gens? If not what options do I have? is it possible to mount a fuel cell under the truck?

Not that I have heard. Most use Jerry cans. If you have a lot of money you can mount anything anywhere, including a fuel cell in your cargo area.

How much fuel are you thinking of carrying? You can get a huge fuel cell if you store it in the back or a bladder cell.

I had the same question about putting a second tank in somewhere. When I eventually get a rear bumper with tire carrier I might have to look into placing a small say 10 gallon tank where the spare was. Then ROAD TRIP to the desert or where ever to play in the dirt!

I would really like another 20-25 gallons or so. My last truck had a 35 gallon tank, it would last 2 weeks before refill, or give me about 600 mile travel distance. I dont think the one in our 4runner is bigger than like 20 gallons... its really puny.

Expeditions West: Toyota Tacoma Auxiliary Fuel Tank System

This modification was completed in preparation for our 2004 Sierra madre Mexico Expedition which would require a fuel range of 320 miles, with 270 miles off-highway. There are several tank options available for the Tacoma, including a 15 gallon tank from Downey, in-bed tanks with gravity feed and others. I wanted the maximum fuel capacity possible, while retaining my bed space and having the tank fit inside of the current departure angle of the Demello rear bumper.

I decided to go full-custom and perform the modification myself to ensure the desired result and ability to repair in the field. The first step was to find a tank that had a capacity of 20 gallons or more and fit in the location of the Tacoma stock spare tire. I reviewed several options, including a Grand Cherokee tank, Wrangler Tank and others. I was fortunate to have my Isuzu Trooper sitting in my garage to take measurements from also. The Trooper tank was a perfect fit, and would require no modifications to work in place of the spare tire. I called several automotive recyclers before finding a 2000 Trooper tank with the fuel pump still in place and the factory skid plate available. This combo cost $180 in AZ.

Front Runner offers auxiliary tanks for many a off road vehicle. Not for the 4runner specifically, but for the Hilux. Which, correct me if I'm wrong, shares a frame with our runners. I dont know how hard they would be to get here, but its worth a look. Options can be nice. Same goes for the Long Ranger tanks. I think ARB has something to do with them, but I'm not sure how readily available they are in the US.

I also use Scepter cans (USA Model). They are fantastic. Other brands have leaky lids, or no lids at all. Old-school ones with non-CARB spouts are nice, but very expensive these days.

Here is a tip, online Scepter fuel cans can be pretty expensive online. Buy them from good ol' Pep Boys. They are only $17 LOLOL

Plastic ones are great if you are not using a fuel can holder. Reason being is that they can conform to the bars on your rack making slippage almost impossible. I have mine wrapped with vulcanized rubber around the middle so that the straps hold them nice and snug. Baja Rack is back ordered on fuel can holders right now. :moping:

I do plan on incorporating some jerry can storage as well... maybe adding 2 for a total of 10 extra gallons, but this will be in addition to the extra 20-25 gallons an extra fuel tank will give me.

So you are going to have about 700 lbs of fuel? Plus the weight of an additional fuel tank?

Depending on exact MPG you would have a range of about 1000 miles. Try as I may I honestly can't find a rational for it. What are your plans with that much fuel?
