23 gallon stock + 20 gallon aux + 10 gallons in cans = 53 gallons = 320 lbs.

There's an awesome thread over on expedition portal (probably first or second page of the 4Runner / Tacoma forum) about a 35 gallon tank that was custom made for a Tacoma. Like others have mentioned here, while that shop (Bend, Oregon) didn't retain their plans, have reproduced their design for one or two other Tacoma owners with good success. It wouldn't be that much of a stretch for them to do the same with a 4Runner.

Probably even less than that as the MPG on the first tank would be less than the second tank due to weight.

6lbs per gallon. I dont see it weighing over 250lbs in addition to stock trim? What am I missing?
I get about 350 miles out of the stock tank an addition 20gallons would give me about another 300mpg. So 650 miles for both tanks. I used to get about 600 miles out of my big dodge 4x4 diesel with a 35gallon tank. 350 miles is ridiculous to me.

The only vehicle I can think of that has an OEM dual tank option from Toyota would be a 70 Series LC. Perhaps if you got a tank mounted where your spare would go, you might be able to use the Toyota tank switching hardware, but those parts will be hard to find in North America. Seems like it could be done by the right person.
I would give Proffitt's Cruisers a call since they have experience with 70 series LCs and see if you might be able to use those parts, and if they can get them. The option is available on new 70 series, so I imagine the parts would be available somewhere on the planet.

Talked with a custom offroad fabricator near me. I think I may drop it off to have him fab me up something. I told him I wanted at least 20 gals. I think I will only need a 2 contact toggle switch in the cab. I will want to have a secondary level instrument mounted in my stock fuel tank that will break the current to the secondary fuel tank when it reaches a certain level. Seems simple enough.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I am in desperate need for an aux tank but I dont want it to be crappily pieced together... 350 miles per tank is ridiculous for an SUV

Assuming this would be for increased off-road range (the only reason I can think of needing an aux tank) I doubt ~17mpg is accurate. I usually get closer to 9-10mpg off-road.

Mine is in the works as soon as I get a bit more work done on my bumper. It will hold approx. 14 gallons between the rear frame rails. Separate filler cap mounted in my rear bumper, tied into the OEM filler neck with an external pump and a Contura switch mounted up front to transfer fuel from the aux. tank to the main. I mainly wanted it for the increased range off road and as a better alternative to carrying Jerry cans.
