This is the only difference in maintenence on a 4wd vs a 2wd, changing transfer case and front diff oil. And with you having snow driving to deal with, no question it is worth it.

Sounds like an AWD limited is the right choice. What color do you think you are going to go with?

Resale, too, always favours AWD. So even with the minor extra costs, it'll be worth more down the road, not to mention a lot more capable on and off the road. Good luck!
 
4-RIPCORD -I really love the grey LTD. I think it looks great. Hence my first choice is going to be the grey. Salsa red might be the second choice. What colored 4 R do you own?

For a while there I was trying to decide between 4R and Mazda CX9 and then again 4 Runner and Highlander LTd. But then I realized that the 4r was always on my list no matter what and that said something. So I finally decided to go with the 4R. I just hope it fits into my garage with the 20' wheels
 
When I was at the dealership picking mine up yesterday they had a Highlander in the showroom in "Crimson Mica". This may be the coolest red colour I've ever seen.

Click on the 5th one. That picture does not do it justice. In the showroom I swore it was black until I looked closely enough. I love black cars, but when I saw this colour I was kindof wishing the 4Runner came in it. Maybe it does in the US?
 
The rim size shouldn't affect the height of the car (or am I wrong?) because the tires are lower profile. I went to look for 17" winter rims and the total wheel size with winter tires was almost identical (20" to 17"). So I don't think it changes the height of the car.

Then again, maybe you were kidding and now I feel silly for explaining it :)

As an aside, in Canada you can't get an FJ Cruiser fully loaded without the roof rack. With the roof rack it is taller than most underground parking lots (taller than an F150). So I immediately rejected the FJ as a possible car for me.
 
No it was actually a serious question because I actually did think that the 20' wheels would make it more difficult to get the beast into the garage.

No, the 20" wheels have low profile tires, so the outer tire diameter of the 17" tires and 20" tires are the same. As a result, height of the 4Runner is basically the same for Limited and SR5. I believe the Trail Edition is a couple inches taller, but I'm not sure whether all of that difference is due to its different roof rack.
 
Just a guess, but the trail may be taller because of the difference in suspension.

I think the roof rack is the same, just black instead of chrome. I love the way the Trail looks. I'm not a huge fan of chrome or leather, and I love the hood scoop. Given all of those things I still went Limited because of the FT4WD/AWD (back on topic!).
