B&M 70268 SuperCooler Transmission Cooler Install on a 3rd Gen

but i didn't lose that much fluid and my dipstick is almost completely dry, with it running.

just hoping i didn't screw somthing up...

i need to buy some ATF, will it take Dex 3 or only use Toyota?

Consider all the new hoses and add more trans. fluid. I used the metal mounting brackets because, after a while if you use the cushion pads, the vibrations will break the pads down. Then you have to metal components abrading against each other and, eventually, two ruined components. I work on UH-1 Hueys and I've learned how a lot of vibration can cause significant damage in a short amount of time.

I know this write-up has been done before, but I haven't seen any writeups that go into significant detail on mounting the cooler via the zip tie method. Also, I took a lot of photos which might help someone out.

Personally I would pass on the zip tie method. The supplied brackets are easily bent to allow for a snug and firm fit off of the condenser so as to get good air flow but not allow it to heat soak from the condenser.

Dex III. The drain plug and dip stick are stamped and our truck call for Dex in the owners Manuel. :biggrin2:

ok, cause someone elsewhere told me Toyota fluid only, and want my truck to last.

i used the zip tie method, but whenever i replace the radiator, i'll go with the brackets.

My best advise on this is don't argue with the owners manual or the words on the dip stick. If you want your T4R to last follow the specs called out in the manual.
Toyota dosn't have Dex ATF bottled, the Toyota dealership will sell you something like valvoline max life which some guys have stated that it dosn't play well with our tranny. Toyota WS doesn't specify on the bottle thats it's comparable with DEX or our transmission.

A lot of us use Castrol IMV with no issues and a ton of miles. If I remember right OP used Napa ATF that will work too.

Believe my dipstick said DEXRON III. Dex VI replaces Dex III and is backwards compatible. I used Dex VI plus a few bottles of Dex III that I had laying around. Haven't had any issues. Can't remember if it was Valvoline or Mobil 1 that I used. Was probably Valvoline.

So after reading countless threads about doing the external tranny cooler install, I think I got it down. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

1. Remove grill
2. Remove skid plate
3. Remove the send and return line from the radiator and from the steel lines coming from the transmission
4. Install NEW tranny lines from the steel transmission lines to the external tranny cooler
5. Mount tranny cooler and connect lines
6. Run a small piece of tranny hose from the old send and return line on the radiator
7. Top off with any ATF that might be lost in the process.

I just bought the same cooler (B&M 70268) and it came with 4ft of hose and I purchased an additional 4ft with extra hose clamps. Is this enough hose needed to run two brand new lines?

I plan on mounting mine the same way as bigfish has (vertical) so the send line goes on top and the return line connects to the bottom, correct?

I appreciate any help. I'm not too mechanically inclined and I just want to make sure I do this once.

i would say plan ahead and buy some extra hose...

me does not want a milkshake of any color

Hello Everyone,

I am new here and this is my first post. I live in FL, I have a 99 SR5 and I've had it for a few months. I have been little by little getting some stuff fixed on it. I was searching about the 4x4 (never used it until this morning for a drive on my complex), and found a thread that talked about the pink milkshake. I have been searching, joined the forum, and did more searches. My 4runner has over 200k miles and I have no clue if I have the OEM radiator. I have not had any issues that I read, but I do not want to be on that small percent that may get it. I just do my regular driving and I do my best to take care of my SR5.

I know this has been posted COUNTLESS of times, and I hate to be that one person that asks what others already have answered probably a million times. So please forgive me and take it easy on me.

Here is what I am guessing, so please correct me if I am wrong.
1. Replace the radiator. Any recommendations or one from NAPA would be just fine?
2. Get the B&M 70264 transmission cooler, with the inline filter.
3. A transmission flush w/ recommended oil (any recommended brand? i try my oil change to be royal purple, so I can do the full year w/ just one change).
4. All the needed parts on the list posted on this thread.

Thank you in advance for all your assistance. Also, thank you for each of you that post stuff to help the rest of us.

First off, welcome to the forum! Lots of great information with very knowledgeable people.

I'm nowhere near as smart or knowledgeable as most of the guys on here but in my opinion if you absolutely want to be on the safe side, replacing the radiator is definitely a step in the right direction. I recently had my original radiator replaced and I'm glad I did because it had a stripped bolt that was begging to release all my trans fluid and coolant. You can read that here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/207611-external-tranny-cooler-help.html

I went with the B&M 70268 tranny cooler for the peace of mind and it doesn't hurt to have extra cooling.

Some people on here say not to "flush" the transmission, just drain old fluid and put new fluid in. Look into that more if you want. Like I said, I'm not a mechanic but I always listen to any advise. I stick with OEM fluids and filters on my 4runner, but to each there own.

This was the radiator I ordered: Amazon.com: Denso 221-0508 Radiator: Automotive
This radiator was recommended by a lot of people and I'm glad I went with it because it was a perfect fit. Denso is also a reputable brand and actually made a lot of the parts on our 4runner's. If you look around the engine bay you will see Denso labeled on some things.

Hope some of this helped.

Hello Kmurt,

Thank you for your input on this. I saw that NAPA has the same radiator, so I will be getting it there. Thinking of getting the Hayden 6778 transmission cooler. From what I read it seems that Hayden is like having the TRD. Also, looking into putting the temp gauge so I can monitor the temp.
