B&M 70268 SuperCooler Transmission Cooler Install on a 3rd Gen

Ok, so can this 'milkshake' happen to any other vehicle with an automatic tranny? I only ever hear about it with our T4Rs.
I would assume it could because I don't think that the radiator/tranny setup on our vehicles is a special Toyota design. Obviously the color would change depending on the color of the fluid.

I'm a new owner of a '99 6 cyl FWD Auto transmission 130k. Last weekend, I bypassed the stock tranny cooler and went with a B&M 70268 to avoid the possibility of milkshake. I picked up 2qts Castrol Transmax Dexron VI to top-off after the switch . My garage has slight incline, nose down, and I lost a little more than 3 qts, added the 2qts I bought, and drove it 9 miles to get more atf. Only then did I notice the the Dexron VI quarts said for GM, though the bottle says "Synthetic blend formula exceeds dextrin III H Requirements". Doh! I replaced the last quart with Mobil 1 Dex synthetic. Fluid didn't look very fresh, and I'm thinking I should drop the pan, clean plug/magnet, and do a flush. I'm praying nothing in that Castrol will damage my tranny. And have a couple of questions:

1) Am I at risk to damage to the tranny with those 2 quarts of the Castrol?

2) For the folks that are swearing by amsoil, which atf are you using from them for your 3rd gen 6cyl 4wd auto tranny?

3 With respect to the diy flush where you use the runner itself to pump out the old atf while you replace with new atf --

3a) After the drain and pan drop, and you replace the pan, do you add those lost quarts immediately into the fill tube before you begin the 'flush?'

3b) Rather than start the engine, pump a quart, stop the engine, add a quart sequence, is there any reason that I couldn't add a couple temporary hose extensions onto the hoses that normally run to and from the cooler, and run instead the return line from a large clean container of new atf, and the send line to a large empty container for the old/dirty atf, and just run the engine once until the new fluid started coming out the send line? Outside of the setup, it seems like this would be a simpler route to go.

Install Thoughts

Watched a B&M install video and they make a good point to allow the cooler to 'float' in order to avoid road stresses that could develop leaks. This item doesn't have the shock mounting the factory coolers get, so I will be sure to (1) use the rubber isolaters to keep contact off the condenser and (2) include rubber washers with their hardware mounts.

Also appreciate the need to flush and seal up the factory connections should a leak ever develop between the radiator and tranny channels. This is 'rocks below the surface' for a premature cooler failure.

My radiator looks fine but it's plastic and I will swap it out for an aluminum one at some point. Already went through this with my Miata...

Thanks very much to all involved in this thread.
I live in a particularly hot part of the world and realize this really is a priority mod for myself and my new truck I am yet to receive.
I understand the mod fully but would like to know this - can I get a bigger cooler from B&M other than the B&M 70264 that will fit as snug as the 70264? My other option is to buy 2 x B&M 70264 coolers and link them in next to each other.
Our driving conditions here are horrendous heat wise and I cannot afford an auto transmission failure ever so would like to ensure a nice cool transmission. It never gets cold here in case you are wondering.
I am limited to who will supply me as most suppliers I have seen on amazon do not post to Mozambique or the UK which are my only two options of actually receiving the item. I am hoping to contact B&M direct and see if they will send out to me.
Again thanks to all who have shared awesome info and pics .... enough to make me actually look forward to doing this mod.

Moz.

70264 vs 70268???

79264 is just a larger volume correct?...

It's more expensive so it must be better right??? Lol.

Why one over the other?

Is it really more effective at cooling?

My mistake sorry ..... i just spent 24 hours solid on the forum and got my numbers/notes in a fiddle. I meant 70268....
Many appologies

Something to keep in mind is that B&M do not make these coolers, they are made by Long in Mexico. They are also sold by TruCool and I think TruCool has more options for sizes and fittings. I run a TruCool 4589 in my 4Runner as we have very hot summers here (47 celcius). The 4589 is an inch longer than the B&M 70264. TruCool also has the 4590 which is 4" longer and several have stuffed that monster in there.

Thanks so much Mgyver1. Great info. I will definatley do more research.
47 celcius is pretty normal summer weather here for us. With roads so badly maintained long hot journeys are simply made longer!
Again thanks so much for the info.

If I double the two new coolers in line I m expecting it will keep my transmission super cool in our climates.

The best option in my opinion would be to replace the radiator with a new one with dual core and keep the trans cooler connected to the transmission, then add two 70264 coolers after the radiator. That will give you the best cooling of the tranny. Each B&M will drop you 20*F below the radiator fluid temp.

Hey Doc .... I hear you and this idea really appeals to me.
I am afraid that somewhere down the road I will end up with a strawberry shake even IF i could obtain a new radiator. This would cross my mind on every trip.
The other thing is the new radiator .....
I know I could get the two new smaller ones and do the mod for say landed and fitted here in Moz for around ...... 800usd at best.
A new radiator ..... well you can double that literally.
So as a quick fix if I get the two smaller ones and inline them and then a year or so down the road when I have Kite for a new radiator I could then inline that new rad with the two smaller ones.
I am thinking an after market type rad with a better internal construction where the pipes for the ATF flow through that will not corrode as easily.
Thanks for that Doc you have reaffirmed it is the right route for me in the long run.
Have a hoofing 2016 people, may it be the year for you and your loved ones.

B&M and Long would need to follow the same rules I suspect..
Here is a quote from Long's brochure in "small print" Tru-Cool Transmission and Engine Coolers: Protect Your Vehicle. Save Your Money. | Tru-Cool

WARNING: If vehicle is operated in temperatures below 32ºF or 0ºC, the cold weather bypass will be required when using Tru-Cool Max coolers.
Tru-Cool Max transmission oil cooler has durable brazed aluminum construction and is designed for those applications that bypass the internal tank cooler for extra
cooling or due to contamination. Tru-Cool Max can also be installed in series for those applications where the intank oil cooler is not damaged or contaminated.

Not saying good or bad... however if you are running below freezing the project may require another ~$45 dollar part.

Another pink milkshake avoided

Installed a B&M 70268 Supercooler today and bypassed the cooler in the radiator. Went pretty well after reading everyone else's experiences. My 2wd 2000 SR5 has 223,000 miles and I wanted makes sure I did not have to deal with the milkshake. I have owned it for a year and based on the car fax it was well maintained prior to my ownership, but I had to make sure.

Thanks to everyone who has written about their experiences making easier for everyone down the line.

I do not remember reading that in print on B&M coolers, but it has been a few years

what 45 dollar part are you talking about

even the diagram in your link shows that the oil when cold ( thick) will bypass the majority of the cooler

not doubting you, just trying to better educate myself

Whtrnr, do you mind sharing where you sourced your cooler? The 70268 that so many people are using (and is what I would like to install on my 4runner) is upwards of $80 on Amazon, rather than the $50-$60 that it sounds like like some people have spent.

Thanks in advance,

Chris "babyfood1217"

I just ordered a B&M 70268, hope to get it installed before my camping/wheeling trip to Trinity Lake in a couple of weeks.

Are you going to bypass your radiator cooler or run the B&M cooler in-series with your radiator cooler? If you're talking bypassing, you might want to do a little more research especially if you're going to be wheeling in slow driving situations and climbing hills. It will also be very helpful if you can monitor your trans temps. Supposedly, the trans temp light will come on when you've reached 300 degrees, which is too late, and you've completely cooked your fluid.

Here's a thread I started regarding trans temps with bypassed set-ups:http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/217667-trans-temps-bypassing-using-external-cooler.html

Here's another regarding how trans temps affect the life of your fluid:http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...sion-temperatures-how-relates-life-fluid.html

Chris,

I ordered mine from Jet.com, they gave a discount on my first purchase and free shipping, and I recd in a couple of days.

I just did a Google search and they are still selling them.

Guys I mounted mine this exact way and I have an atf leak From the lines I've tightened down the clamps used proper line and I don't even know anymore I think I'm just going to try steel lines and adapters
