Sideways mounting cooler

Just ordered the B&M today for my 2001, going to do the sideways mount, but I read that B&M says the supply line must go in the bottom fitting. I've noticed several folks here doing the opposite, and others mounting theirs with the connections facing downwards. B&M recommends against this. Just sayin'..... Has anyone had problems with the recommended hookup for mounting the cooler sideways?

Well, I don't have a temp gauge yet, nor a scangauge either. So, I don't know if mine is cooling properly or not. I'll just have to wait and see if the send line from the transmission to the top of my cooler is making much of a difference with the temp. after I can get a gauge. It would be an easy change though. Just swap the two hoses on my cooler if it was an issue.

I just completed the trans cooler install yesterday. Thanks to Big Fish and others, I think I could have done this one with my eyes shut. :thumb3: I ended up using the brackets and once had them bent and trimmed, I shot them with 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of satin black. I ran the cooler lines through the same hole as the A/C lines. I had some 1/4" fuel line left over from the ISR mod, so I used it to line the hole and and protect against chafing. Same concept as others have done, just a little neater in appearence IMO. Thanks to you as well PDX for the recommendation to run water through the existing transcooler before connecting the recirculating hose. I can now drive around with confidence knowing I won't experience the strawberry milkshake!! Thanks guys!

Going to buy on Amazon, and "other people bought" remote tran filter, and temp gauge, can anyone recommend for or against these 2 add'tl items?

I wouldn't get them. I don't know of anyone running a remote trans filter and if you have a 99+ you can get a scanguage, which will read the trans temp.

I have both of these things. I would say yes on the filter, why would you not want a filter? SCrunner is right on the gauge though, I trust my scangauge more than my trans temp gauge. Although it does look pretty cool where I have it set up!

I have the trans. cooler and no inline filter. Is that a bad idea? I rely on the transmission filter that is installed in the trans. pan.

And about the scangauge II: will it tell me the trans. temp on a '97 'Runner?

It isn't a big deal, the filter is just extra protection. But no, the SG wont read your trans temps. Its aftermarket gauge or nothing.

Thanks for the write-up. I finally installed my cooler today and this was a good read before hand to know what to expect and pick up on the little tips you covered.

To anyone thinking about doing this, quit messing around and do it, it's easy. I feel much better knowing I don't have to worry about the deadly pink mikshake.

Great write-up BigFish! I installed my B&M cooler today and your write up was helpful, especially on how to mount the cooler and route the new lines to it.

One thing I thought I'd mention was in your required parts list, you have 4' of 3/8" ID tranny hose listed. I'm not sure if you used the supplied 4' of 5/16" hose for the other line or not, but I just bought 8' of 3/8" hose (two 4' sections - one for each line) so they would be the same diameter.

ok so i have a 99 4x4 sr5 4runner.. and want to also avoid the strawberry milkshake... its mainly a daily driver on the road.. never go offroading and i live in northern suburbs of illinois.. cold winters and hot summers.. would the B&M 70264 Supercooler be sufficient enough for me? or would i need a bigger cooler like the 70264 14,000btu... or even bigger...?

Could I get some of ya'll expert's opinions on this?

It's a Hayden 3/4"x11"x6", says good for normal duty driving vehicles up to 18,000 GVWR. I don't tow anything or go off-road, just around town and highway driving. Think it's enough? Good mounting position?

I may be wrong (probably am) but I hooked my buddies scan gauge up to my 4runner and put in the transmission codes into the scan gauge (two long alpha numeric codes), and it was able to read the trans temp sensors in the trans. It never got over 175 driving in stop and go traffic and a few WOT runs. THis is with a 70268.

Sidenote my car only gets 1.4 mpg at WOT

Eryan36, I would mount it higher up. Just make sure it is in front of the fan, so it actually gets air.

I said that in reference to a specific question about a 97. 99+ 4runners can display tranny temps through the Scangauge.
