Backlight for digital display

I think the backlight on my digital display has gone out. This is the digital display that shows the time, temperature, A/C and heater speed, etc. Is the display supposed to have a backlight? If so, how do fix it?

We recently purchased the vehicle so we are not sure if it was supposed to have a backlight to begin with.
