Backspacing/ rubbing question

I'm thinking about buying some Method Race wheels: 17x8.5, 0 offset, 4.75" backspace. I plan to mount my 275/70 Destinations. I've got a couple questions for you experts out there:

Are 8.5" rims too wide for 275's?

Will a 4.75" backspace rub on stock UCA's?...The only guy I've seen on here with Method Wheels had aftermarket UCA's.

Has anyone heard anything about these rims? I think they look great, but not many people on the forum have gone this route, is there a reason?

Great choice in wheels!

I purchased the 20" brushed aluminum finish.

It was 20x9, +18mm offset and mounted them on Yokohama Geolander A T/S 275/55/20.

I do have Overland Warehouse/Radflo coilovers at its shortest/lowest setting in the front and Overland/Radflo shocks in the rear with stock springs

With this tire size and wheel size and suspension., it sits flush to my fender.

Absolutely no rubbing at all...in full lock either forward or reverse.

Even without coilovers, I'm thinking you should be good with the 17s and 275 width. Call Method just to make sure. I actually drove down to there warehouse in Temecula to pick up my wheels. They are very kind and helpful.

Another good idea maybe to ask the shop I had my wheels and suspension put on.

It is Demello Offroad in Corona, CA. The owner's name is Jason Demello and he is very knowledgable in wheel offsets. If you're wiling to call them, I am sure he can help you. Demello is a very well know and reputable shop in So Cal.

Fit and finish of the wheels are great. Center cap could be improved, but overall great looking, great functioning wheel.

4.5" Back space is perfect for our 4runners, so 4.75" should be just fine.

With any wheel, the only real way to tell is order and test fit. But your should be good to go with that setup. 8.5" is not too wide for those tires either.

Also the 20s that SoCalSnake mentions are not at all like the ones you are looking at. His have a positive 18 offset, so his wheels are like a 5.5" backspace? The ones you want are 4.5 bs a full inch different, they are going to be an inch inside the wheel well than his 20's. Anyway, prob too much info, sorry, but the wheels you mentioned will be perfect. We want as close to 4.5 backspace as we can get on our 4runners.

Here is a little explanation of offset on wheels. Hope this helps out a little

Offset is measured from the wheel mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel.

Positive Offset is when the wheel mounting surface is outside of the wheel centerline.

Negative Offset is when the wheel mounting surface is inside of the wheel centerline.

Thanks BFLAN! :cheers: I'll do a little more research before I pull the trigger on these. My main concern is the wheels are described as "street" wheels. I do some mild off-roading at home, and I'd like to do something like the FJ Summit some day, so I don't want weak wheels.

No prob. I understand why your hesitant on strength, dont know what to tell you there. But most wheels, if they are built right, will be strong enough for anything we will put them through, different story if you are looking at full forged, bead locked, wheels.

As far as sizing though, you are on the right track, like I said, 4.5" BS is perfect so any wheel that is around there you will be happy with. Minimal rubbing issues or none depending on tire size and you will not have to run spacers which is a plus

Did you see their Race Wheels line? Pretty sure those are much stronger than the Street Wheels line. I went with the Street Wheels b/c my 4Runner won't see much more than some light trails if that. I bought it to haul my mountain and road bikes, gear and people.

You might consider those.
