Backup Camera - is there a better version?

Morning. Dumb question of the day - is there a better version of the backup camera? My wife's Camry and my F250 all seem to have better cameras - especially at night- (I'd guess the camera in the Camry and 4Runner are the same?). The day view isn't that bad, but at night it's really "blair witch" like.

If the day view is the same between the two, then the night difference is lighting.

Upgrade your BU lights.

At night my wife's BU camera on her Lexus (IS F-Sport) is way better and I would attribute most of that to her lighting which is significantly brighter. It truly looks like daytime...very cool actually!

Start with some quality LED backup lights (many 921 options, JDM Astar $25 on Amazon). If you need more, check out the Diode Dynamics back-up/turn signal mod or add additional lighting. I would start small though... you dont want the light to diminish the usability of the camera.

Did you install that? Do I have to splice/cut wires for teh backup light option?

I wouldnt call it a splice, but yes you add a harness and one jumper wire (with the purple end)

I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually removed a set of Philips reverse light bulbs and went back to stock ones.

To me, the image from the camera at night looks better with the stock bulbs. The LEDs seemed to wash it out.

Here is my current view... #Idonotgetpaidbydiodedynamics

Daytime is fine (not steller - but not bad). Night...yesh....

^^^^Agreed. Daytime when lens is clean is really quite nice (I think it’s even better than my wife’s Infinity). Nighttime, whoooooooleeee different story. I think about it every morning when I back out of my driveway at 6am...

Hadn’t really thought about trying to adjust lighting to make it better, but might now that I’m intrigued a little.

+1 to the upgrading your BU lights or doing the DD harness taillight mod instead of replacing the backup cam unless you are looking for 4k quality resolution or something.

I went with the JDM ASTAR 800 lumens LED bulbs myself.

Are those basically plug in play? No wiring modification needed?

Yeah they have the integrated bulb base. Just swap 'em out.

Also, these were in stock on Amazon as of yesterday but currently out of stock. Looks like you can still get them on their site or ebay in the meantime.
