Backup Sensors Stopped Working ('10 Limited)

Hello All,

My backup sensors stopped working on my '10 4Runner Limited. I know the SR5's have the button to enable/disable but to my knowledge the Limited doesnt have that same feature.

I checked the owners manual to find the fuse(maybe its blown) but no mention of the backup sensors in there.

Any ideas why they would stop working?

Did they just completely die out of the blue, or have you been noticing intermittent issues? I would first make sure the sensors are clean, and maybe try to stick your head under the bumper to see if the wires are all intact?

I did have one of mine go out due to constant sun exposure I think, I guess that corner of my old car got the most sun during the day when parked and it burnt it out I guess.

'10 Limited has backup camera, not sensors. I'm pretty sure that only SR5 has factory backup sensors.

They stopped working out of the blue a few weeks back. I bought it as Certified Pre-Owned and came pre-installed with the back-up sensors (I am assuming the work was done by toyota as it was a 1 owner lease vehicle??) and it does have the backup camera.

I did check behind the bumper to ensure the wires werent damaged at all and everything looked fine (as far as i could tell).

eddiebox - did a single sensor failure cause the entire system to stop working?

That's wild - my '11 Limited did not have backup sensors available as an option. I didn't think the '10 did either.

Nope, only the effected sensor stopped working, everything else was fine, and it was a gradual failure...sounds like you've got a different problem since it just all decided to stop working.

Really? I'll post pics when I get home tonight.

Out of curiosity, do you have a back up camera in the mirror or on the nav screen? I never really looked into the different options in detail, but I always thought the sensors are linked to if you have a nav screen or not. ie. the SR5 without any backup camera or just a mirror backup camera will have the sensors; and the LE with the mirror backup camera would have the sensors, but the LE with the navi option will not have the sensor. I think the TE just does not get sensors ever because the rear bumper cover is different, and well real rugged men don't need no stinkin sensors :p

EDIT: Just checked the 2013 4runner brochure and it seems like the rear sensors are not an option on the LE at all from the factory. Now I really wonder if you guys all have aftermarket ones that are installed by the dealer? Post pictures!

Backup camera comes up on Nav Screen.

2010 LE fully loaded - no backup sensors.

Why would you need backup sensors AND backup camera ??

i have the backup screen on my navi unit not rear view mirror. Another thing i noticed is I only have 2 sensors left/right of center not on the corners of the bumpers like ive seen most have. Would toyota install only 2 sensors not 4?

those sensors come in handy when parking in DC for us city slickers :cowboy:

Ill post pictures of the setup when i get home from work tonight...

It's actually not as redundant as it sounds, I used to have a backup camera along with front and rear sonar sensors. The corner sensors are the most handy when parallel parking since the rear view camera does not provide a very clear picture of that area. It's nice to have, but not something I'd spend money on to get.

Backup sensors are a very nice compliment to the camera. You might have sun reflecting on the camera screen when you move and you can miss something. Then camera might be blocked by rain/snow. And finally sometimes you need to look around and not only on the camera so sound signal comes handy. In 90% camera is enough but sensors might be helpful in other 10%.

OP's sensors probably aftermarket or dealer installed - nice thing to have but whoever installed them probably didn't do a very good job.

Ah, that makes sense, I've seen the camera showing psychedelic image because a single drop of rain.

Americas, I hope someone can help you with your problem.
