Bad experience with Andy's Autosport

I wanted to share the following experience that I had with Andy's Autosport.

After searching far and near for someone who still carried the WAAG grill guard for my 3rd gen 4Runner, I was happy to find it on the Andy's Autosport website.

I ordered it on Nov. 26th, along with the WAAG taillight guards. (They charged me $100 shipping for the grill guard, and $60 shipping for the taillight guards, which seemed excessive, but I really wanted them).

After waiting patiently for about a month, I called them to check on the status of the order, having not heard anything. The woman I spoke to on the phone was not particularly helpful, and told me that they had forgotten to submit the order with WAAG, and that I would need to wait a few more weeks.

Finally, I got an email from Andy's Autosport a few days ago, telling me that WAAG no longer makes the items, and that I needed to call them to cancel the order. (I'm not sure why it wasn't just cancelled automatically).

So, I called again, waited on hold, and spoke to a woman who was even less helpful then the first one. I gave her my order number, and she said, "OK, what can I do for you?" I told her, "Well, I'm responding to your email, because apparently you guys just figured out that the items you charged me for two months ago are no longer available, and you needed me to call to cancel the order." She cancelled the order, and told me to wait a week for the refund to appear.

I'm pretty disappointed overall with the fact that it took them two months to figure out that they're selling items on their website that don't exist, and their general lack of being apologetic about it. (Also- they still have the items listed for sale on their site, which means that the same thing could happen to someone else).

I'm sharing my experience for two reasons:

1). I wanted to share the story to warn others in case other people have had issues with their general lack of awareness regarding order status, etc.

2). I'm curious to know if anyone else has had good/bad experiences with Andy's Autosport, and if I should give them another chance in the future with other products, or avoid them.

Thats about what I figured would happen with them. They just seemed to have too many rare listings for everything. Wreaks of out of touch re-distributor :nono:. My guess is the excessive shipping charge is likely a result of having to pay for the distributor to send it to them, then to have it shipped to you.

I've only ever used them basically to find out who makes certain products for my vehicles then I search around and order elsewhere.

Shopping for a brush guard has turned into a crazy ordeal now...

Having given up on locating a WAAG guard, I settled on the Westin, which seemed to be the next best one.

I placed an order at bestinauto.com, and then soon received a phone call from them stating that they no longer carry the Westin brush guard, and they were canceling my order and issuing me a refund. (At least it took them less than 24 hours, and required no action on my part, unlike Andy's Autosport). That being said, still frustrating since another order has now been canceled and I'm back at square one.

I spent a few hours online, did a lot of shopping around, and almost just ordered one of the cheap ones from Amazon:

Toyota 4Runner Black Brush Guard / Grille Guard for the 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 4Runner : Amazon.com : Automotive

But, I was worried about the longevity based on the cheap price, so I decided after more research to order a Go Rhino. (Free shipping from Amazon, not bad).

Amazon.com: Go Rhino! 3723MB Sumatra 3000 Series Stepguard Black Grille Guard: Automotive

Just as I was about to place the order, I figured I would do one more search to see if some random website happened to have some WAAG's left over in stock... I located a website, GroundDynamics.com, that still carried the WAAG brush guard, and it was only $489, which is better than the other prices I had seen. Woo Hoo!

Toyota 4Runner 1996-2002 - Waag Grill Guards

So, I decided to go ahead and take a chance and order it from Ground Dynamics.

As soon as I submit my order, I get an email from Andy's AutoSport confirming my order.

What? I'm confused. I ordered from GroundDynamics, and I get an email from Andy's Autosport. So apparently, Ground Dynamics is just a mirror site/sister site for Andy's Autosport.

This was in the middle of last night that I made the order, so, knowing that I'm just going to have to call and cancel it, I went ahead and ordered the Go Rhino model from Amazon.

So, I call Andy's Autosport this morning and speak to a nice guy, and explain to him that I just ordered something from their other site, and knowing the back story with them, I needed to cancel the order. (I also suggested, very politely, that they might want to update their website(s) so that this doesn't happen to other customers).

He apologized, and told me that "WAAG has been having employee issues," and that their particular contact at WAAG had been neglecting to submit their orders, and WAAG was aware of the problem. (Basically, it sounded like someone was getting fired from WAAG for not doing their job).

So, he tells me- hold on, before I cancel your order let me call WAAG and double check that they really don't have it.

I wait on hold, and he comes back to tell me that YES, I can still get the brush guard from WAAG. Supposedly they don't stock them, but they build them on an as-ordered basis, and I will have it in five weeks.

I'm still a bit skeptical, but I told him to go ahead and keep my order, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I immediately go online to cancel my Amazon order for the Go Rhino model, and I'm informed that my order cannot be cancelled. (It was a third party vendor through Amazon, which I think was partly the problem).

SO- now I have a Go Rhino brush guard on its way to me that I don't want, and I'm waiting five weeks for WAAG to make me the brush guard that I DO want.

This could not have possibly been a more complicated and frustrating ordeal. Unless of course I send back the Go Rhino model, and then Andy's Autosport calls me in two more months to tell me they were just kidding, and WAAG can't actually make the brush guard.

Anyways- Sorry for such a long, boring story. Posting on here is like therapy. Very cheap therapy :)

I'll keep you all updated on what I find out, in case there's anyone else on here that is also searching for a brush guard for their 3rd gen. (And yes, I know, most people suggest not getting them).

andys autosport is one of the worst companies in the automotive retail world. i deal with their crap on a regular basis.

I know it's your truck, and if you want a brush guard it's your choice, but I feel like I NEED to tell you that for not much more money than one of those brush guards you can get a pretty friggin awesome plate bumper...

Words out of my mouth!

And can't you just cancel the Andys "new" order? I doubt they'll start making the brush guard or whatever for at least a week anyways.

Sorry for your trouble. Def to much energy wasted and I spend alot of time with reviews and research before buying. I just paid 250 for the hunter shipped in a week and although its not a westin I just couldn't see spending any more and they all look about the same anyway. Although you could get into a custom plate bumper for not much more like everyone mentions, I think the brushgaurd looks tough while not overdone with the rock crawler look.

You are absolutely right, I could cancel the Andy's order (And it would probably be the financially responsible thing to do). But after this much trouble and two months of waiting, I really want the right one. From everything I've read, the WAAG is above and beyond the other brands in build quality and mounting design.

I know, I definitely get the point regarding the aftermarket bumper vs. brush guard. I totally agree that a bumper more functional if you're going off road. This truck is really just for road trips to Tahoe in the snow though, and as far as looks goes, I prefer the looks of the brush guard. (And it will still give me somewhere to mount my PIAA's). If I was going to be doing serious wheeling, I would get a bumper with a built in winch.

Thank you for all the feedback everyone- it's appreciated... I know I'm in the minority with my choice of purchases on this one, but it's still nice to hear everyone's opinions. :thumb:

You know what you like and like what you know. Nothing wrong with that! Here's one that's local to me. Not sure what brand it is, but I'd be happy to get it and ship it too you if you want. I probably wouldn't be able to take a look at it until next week though.

Thanks for the offer! I'm going to hang tight and wait for the WAAG one, thanks though.

Latest update in the saga...

I received the Westin brush guard from Amazon, that I was trying to cancel.

On the plus side, it shipped for free, which was impressive considering how much most places charge to ship these things.

The downside, this is what the box looked like when it got here:

I sent it back without even opening it...

Now I'm back to playing the waiting game while WAAG is supposed to be making one for me.
