We ended up at around 28" on top of the mountain. Our town is used to a few big snows every year but they usually are from 8"-18" deep. When we get two feet things start to shut down. Saturday the only thing open was the Waffle House. For our whole town to shut down meant it was unusually deep.
To the poster that wants to find tires for his 4Runner to go in 24" of snow off road: Good luck. I was the first out of my road Saturday and driving in 24" of snow presents a whole host of problems, the biggest being high centered. The ONLY way around that is larger diameter tires and even with 35's like [MENTION=104049]marshal[/MENTION] you only have 11" or so clearance before everything is dragging through the snow. It takes a lot of power to go through snow that deep too. I went about 1/2 mile and had to back up and hit it again several times to make the initial pass through 24". It wasn't because my tires weren't getting traction because of the tread pattern, it was because my truck was floating up on top of the snow. Anyway, glad everyone is OK and saw how good their 4Runner does in the snow!

I don't envy you guys at all, looks like it would be fun for a little while. I went for a 3 hour motorcycle ride with a budy, watched football after.... got up for work and decided to ride in to, can't imagine having to shovel my way out every morning!
I'll drive a couple hours to the snow to get my fix then come back home when I've had enough :thumb3:.

Still no snow plow on our street. I think the neighbors at the end of the cul-de-sac dug themselves out today. We tried yesterday but the snow blowers couldn't cut through. APG is on a 4 hour delay tomorrow wth schools still closed. I went to the grocery store today and the roads are still pretty covered with one entire lane still being covered in 2+ feet of snow. The store was pretty empty. I'll be interested to see the condition of some of the main roads tomorrow. I think the problem they're having is where to put the snow and the lack of heavy equipment to move it. It's supposed to rain on Tuesday so that should be interesting.

Still waiting on what sleepy Meade will do tomorrow. We were finally dug out with a bucket loader this morning but I know a lot of folks still trapped on their neighborhoods.

)Loader came through and got the wife's 2010 4 runner home yesterday from my parent's house. Still have to dig mine out today. About 3.5' and a 8' long path to dig today to get to the path cleared by the loader. Felt good to get out of the house last night with the use of the wife's 4runner.

This isn't surprising. I used to live on the UES in 2010 during the Dec 2010 snow storm that dumped 28" of snow and people died when ambulances couldn't get to them because asshat people in low clearance (mostly luxury) vehicles thought they could make it, got stuck and abandoned their cars and blocked roads. Buses also got stuck and blocked streets and they couldn't get to people in medical distress. It was an ugly black eye for the city, I think 8 people died because of it. While that's not a lot of people in a city of over 8 million, the fact anyone died because someone decided to be an idiot is unfortunate.
On my side of the world, it's predicted to be a low of 53 this week. I expect the locals to break out their winter coats again just like they did when it hit 51 a few weeks ago.

my truck did great thru the whole storm thankfully.. a few times.. we had to go around ppl who thought they could follow us on a road we had made easier by driving over the same area a few times.. but then they'd try and get stuck.. so i gave it a shot.. literally at the end of the storm so the snow was at max height (my area n. potomac according to WTOP got the most in the metro area at 36.x").. but as i went to pass them in untouched snow.. the truck actually kept going fine.. but i had all traction control off and had the rpm's up high to keep the tires spinning and got by no problem.. Duratracs and skinny pedal FTW

So after this storm...is anybody else thinking of purchasing maxtrax (or something similar), for "just in case"? I think if I had a fwd car, I would probably keep a cheaper set in my trunk, just so I would be able to get some forward momentum.
I suppose carrying some sand or kitty litter around would be able to help too.

The stock dunlops on the newer trails aren't all that great in deep snow. I got stuck in 4HI; all the electronic aids and the locking rear diff completely negate the deficiencies of the tires though. A quick switch to 4LO to get out of the tricky stuff, and I was quickly on my way with no problems.
