Best speculation of a 2023 6th generation I have seen

Huge improvement on looks especially the front grill. Guess I’m used to Apple new product announcements that give actual details so the video was a big disappointment. Waiting for more information to be released.

Also wondering if they will offer anything like the GXOR concept version

17 mpg is not bad considering everything going against it. Knobby 33" tires, good factory clearance, and an absolute box shape kills all efficiency.

Interesting bits from what I've read.

- 349 hp / 479 ft lbs of torque.

- locking rear differential (overtrail)

- 33" AT tires (overtrail)

- Hybrid coming at a later date

- e-KDSS system (overtrail?)

- approach/breakover/departure angles 26°/24°/22° (overtrail)

- Nori Green on Overtrail edition (this is going to be quite popular)

- up to 8000 lbs towing

New gx is 83” wide! Damn that’s as wide as my tundra. Good luck taking that through trails

Yeah, the more I have watched videos and read up on this thing, the size combined with the not so great approach, departure and break-over angles I think would make it really terrifying to take one of these into more advanced trails without doing a bunch to protect it.

I also hate to say it, but I think the Defender 110 is probably the better vehicle for offroading still.

I don't understand why Toyota axed the V6 in the Highlander only to bring it back with the TX as a hybrid which is Lexus's version of the Grand Highlander.

I wonder if the Prado will be offered with the V6? And I wonder if the Prado/4Runner will be a bit downsized compared to the GX?

I like the new gx look. :thumb3: specs seem pretty solid and the V6 twin turbo would be nice to tune!!! Do hope the 4runner sees the same engine but more likely the 4cyl hybrid turbo

IF the Prado comes to the US then it should be on par with the GX. IF so then my guess is that would be not great news for the 4R Gen 6, at least in regards to engine options for those wanting 6 cylinders. See the new Tacoma.

Loving the new GX. I think they did great on it and really improved the look from the unfortunate front end on the GX460. I really appreciate they actually gave it an offroad package instead of what all the others are doing with just a cheesy name and a front "skid plate" like the Explorer Wilderness, Honda's Trailsports, VW Atlas Peak, etc. With that said though, Overtrail is a cheesy name. Should have just left it "Trail" to keep it Toyota theme. Marketers gotta market I guess. Locking rear/center diffs, disconnecting swaybar, and some good tires is a good effort. Wonder if the suspension is different, but it looks fairly tall. Bravo Toyota. Curious to see how big it is inside. Initial look looks 4Runner sized, but need some measurements at this point.

I'm sure it will be out of my price range and 17MPG is pretty embarrassing, but hey...it's a high horsepower box on wheels. I didn't buy my 4R for the MPG either, but sure would enjoy those kind of power numbers and amount of gears to hit 17mpg. I see it being a hit rather than just blending into traffic like the 460.

Lots to love.

But 17mpg. How's that possible to do that poorly in a midsize SUV? The ttv6 is turning out to be really disappointing in efficiency. Probably why they didn't use it in the Tacoma.

I'm with you on the engine choice and MPG. The Defender 110 is rated at 20 mpg combined (18/23) with the 395 hp 3.0L super/turbo charged I6. Even the heavier Defender 130 (which is closer in size to the GX) is rated at 19 (17/21) with the same engine. The supercharged 503 hp V8 in the Rovers is nearly as efficient as the TTV6 in the GX550 (16 combined, 14/19).

Yes, the Defender is a unibody, but I'll stick to my guns that a properly tired Defender 110 will probably do better in most trails than a GX550 OT. They simply are too large to be a compelling vehicle for that use.

I agree, that's how I see it going too.

I guess I just don't get it. The Tundra SR 4x4 has the same engine/trans combo. Basically the same powertrain. It's bigger and less aerodynamic. And it gets 20 (18/24). Where is that efficiency going in the GX? Even the LX600 is 19 (17/22). It's 15% less efficient than the Tundra and 10% less efficient than the LX?

I am not a fan of the styling but I am especially unimpressed by two things:

1/ The approach angle just does not cut it. At all. Who cares for locking rear diff, kdss, whatever with 26 degrees AA? Definitely not me. Show stopper right here.

2/ 17 mpg? Really? I get 17 real life mpg in the good ancient 4R. Sure, I can be 13.5 towing a lightweight trailer and with a roof basket at interstate speeds in Montana. But normally I can bet on 17 once I am at base camp.

Full disclosure: I was never interested in the new GX anyway, but the approach angle is enough to make me yawn and keep temptation at bay.

Otoh, the Tacoma...

I'm definitely with you. What good is KDSS and a center and rear locking differential when you've ripped off both of your bumpers :).

From what I understand the GX will have a slightly detuned version of the same engine as the Tundra. And I would bet that the main mission was emissions over actual MPG.

I share the disappointment with the less that ideal angles but its better than the GX460 and probably not an issue with the typical Lexus buyer. Those that may get one to use as God would want us to will need to modify it anyways – no different than when the 5th Gen 4R came out and we had to wait for the aftermarket to catch up. My initial thoughts went right to what kind of winch bumper would work and where the hell to put a second battery and compressor. There’s supposed to be a PLUS version of the Overtrail but that may just include more luxury gadgets.

Still looks like very solid and legit bones to start thinking about.
