My life was different when I bought my 4Runner than it is now. I used to go exploring fairly frequently. It made sense then but doesn't now.
I think this applies to many of us who are not yet in a "settled" phase of their life. I've found the transition to 1 kid and then 2 kids to really disrupt both your vehicle needs and your lifestyle. You can try your best to keep it up, but it's never 100% possible.
For instance, we actually stomached our VW Golf R with an infant and then rear facing car seat with a single kid. My wife had to ride in the passenger seat though to make it work and it was TIGHT. Once we knew we were going to have a second kid though, we knew we had to go a bit larger for our second vehicle. Now our problem is that if people come to visit us when we want to move around the family of 4 plus additional folks, it's actually most comfortable if we take two cars (which is just stupid).
The fact that the VW was over 60K mileage, running out of warranty and had some issues made it an easy decision to unload it though
