Meh. It's one truck. Wake me up if this happens to 50 trucks in the next few months.

I don't have any reason to believe Toyota abandoned durability until I see lots of widespread evidence otherwise. Third gen Tacomas had their share of early issues upon release, as did 4th gen 4Runners, and other things.

The only thing I don't like about the new Tacoma is the price. I think they kind of stuck it to the common man by using a new generation as as excuse to bump it like $4k on most trims, same-for-same. Sure, you'll save that much in gas over 100k miles, but that's not money I wanted to give to Toyota instead of putting in my own pocket.

To be clear, the failure happened in a diff component that is designed to fail under extreme circumstances to avoid grenading the entire diff. This failure didnt happen under "extreme circumstances" is the issue. The vehicle was still able to be driven to the dealership however.

The diff from their truck was removed and replaced with a new one so toyota could examine it being an early model / failure. The diff could have been repaired in place according to TFL. They went on to tow 5k lbs in 4WD up a pretty steep and slick road and then offroad it without issue.

I am a fanboy but do think we should proceed with healthy skepticism. Not a good look and Im sure this video will have a decent impact on early sales and toyota will rectify it. The positives here are the repair being covered under warranty and the diff not going full grenade. TFL definitely gets special treatment but would your average consumer get the same warranty coverage as it was an offroad failure? A lot of questions here.

The issue of price is a real one for me vs EV. For our main city car, I think we will go Model Y in August. There is nothing at a similar price range that is remotely competitive all-rounder with some travel ability (so no cars, WRXs etc) in MY eyes. And now the Rivian r2 puts Rivian back on the table.

I have done plenty real 4x4 trails in a Subaru Outback, I will have a field day in a Rivian assuming the R2 keeps the R1 traits. Oh, and how about street acceleration?

The 5th gen is a keeper till it falls apart, but I am losing interest in new ICEs given all the ICE price increases and EV price decreases. And, yes, that acceleration....

I hate all the fluid changes and I have to go argue with the dealer, again, that after they replaced the ATF, shifts are not always as smooth as they used to be...Not bothering with traditional dealers is yet another thing I look forward to.

Only downside cargo room? How about lack of third row if you want one, lack of 2000 to 3000 pounds of tow capacity, lack of better interior materials and potentially standard/optional equipment (like the Mark Levinson system and massaging seats), etc.

To me the fuel economy of the GX550 is a small sacrifice for everything I'd pick up versus a loaded Land Cruiser. Plus Lexus is less susceptible to BS ADM than Toyota dealerships by far.

I was pretty clear in that I was talking about my personal situation.

Overtrail doesn't come with a 3rd row. So that's out of contention. If you need the full 8000lbs of towing capacity, the hybrid models are out of contention, so the whole debate is moot. Buy the GX Premium or Luxury with 3rd row because that's the only one that will mostly meet your basic requirements. The 3rd row gives up cargo space... those seats have to go somewhere when stowed.

For me, I've towed exactly 3 times in the 120k miles I've put on my 5th gens and they were all under 3000lbs. IDGAF about a higher towing rating. Like I said, it depends what you personally value. For me, the hybrid is zero downside over the V6TT.

For better or for worse, we're a capitalistic society, so someone is going to markup high demand vehicles. Whether it is the dealer or the multitudes of people that put a deposit on one just to flip. I saw this when I was getting my GR Corolla. So many people just so happened to need money to start a business or their situation changed blah blah blah after they put a couple hundred miles on it and Cars and Bids was getting big money on them. You just have to be patient and hopefully find a dealer that is scummy.

I drove the new turbo Tacoma a couple weeks back at the Hatfield McCoy trails in WV. Not sure I love the new instrument panel assuming it carries over to the 4Runner 1:1 like Sequoia did for Tundra. It's a little blocky and juvenile, IMO. I prefer the interior of my 5th gen. That said, the powertrain is really a nice fit. Gobs of torque, smooth shifts. The truck really drove nicely. Much preferred to the Tundra and Sequoia that are so.freaking.big on the road. Getting back into my 5th gen 4Runner definitely highlighted how nicely the new Tacoma drove. So, I'm very hopeful for the new 4Runner. I just hope we get an interior that is a little more toned down in comparison to the Tacoma.

My 4Runner is a company car and it is due to be replaced next year. For me, it comes down to which model and trim hits the sweet spot for cost and capability. I was pretty much 100% on the hybrid for efficiency and performance reasons before driving the non-hybrid T24, but I think I would be happy with the non-hybrid T24, too. Since wifey has a really high efficiency vehicle, going hybrid will 100% be a question of the performance bump being worth the cost bump. I can always choose to buy my current 4Runner at the end of term, too. Excited to see what is available this time next year.

No issues other than changing out the original OEM head unit as you can't use the GPS while in motion. Not to mention I miss a sunroof. First couple of years the TRD PRO had no sunroof available, so I'm excited to get a new one. Hoping they keep the roll down rear window as well. I've tried to keep up with all the threads but I'm curious as to why the new 4Runner is the last to reveal?

One thought is the Land Cruiser 250 was supposed to be the new 4Runner then Toyota realized they could bring back the LC name in the US and make a lot of money. Others say it was redesigned a few years back and then Ford released the Bronco so they wanted to redesign it again to compete with that.

I'd bet on the first option as the rumour is the 6th gen is just a Tacoma with a cap on the back.
