Now that would get you on TV--that has to be one of the most messed up things I've heard in a while.

Anyway, about gas mileage, my wife drives the 4runner 80% of the time, and she must be driving the wheels off the thing. I've stopped calculating gas mileage b/c it makes me cry. But, I knew what I was getting in to when I bought the thing. Traded my Honda Civic for the runner, and I have no regrets. I fill her up every weekend and grit my teeth every month when the credit card bill comes.

I've picked up 1.8 mpg since adding my K&N intake system, and thats with aggresive driving, can't wait to take it on a road trip and reap the benefits.

Exhaust will help with gas as well, as long as your not listening to it constantly

Every car I've owned has had one, last toyota had 180,000 miles on it with no problem.

It's all preference, some people like Kerry, some people like Bush.

Almost every race team, regardless of what type of racing, runs and aftermarket filter, be it K&N, Amsoil, etc...

I'd love US gas prices too. Canadian equivelent Liters to Gallon... $3.25/Gallon. It's reached 85.9 cents/Liter here.

You also have to remember the money isn't really coming out of his own pocket and if K&N is paying him to run their filters that's the bottom line and I'm sure they run a new filter all the time and I bet they also run some type of cover over the filter that K&N also sells.
I've also heard that a slightly dirty K&N filters better than a new one but still allows more flow than an OEM one. The problem with K&N is sometimes they are overoiled and can the excess oil can contaminte your MAF and cause some issues but control how much oil you put on it and you shouldn't have any problems.

I've run both an OEM and K&N in my Runner and I've seen no diff in power or mpg and I do have the deckplate mod also.

Here's a pretty definative test done on various filters - read it & weap!

Air Filter Test

The Flow Restriction response curves for each filter have the same basic shape. However, note how the AC Filter, which passed the smallest amount of dirt and had the highest dirt capacity and efficiency, also had the highest relative restriction to flow. The less efficient filters correspondingly had less restriction to flow. This illustrates the apparent trade-offs between optimizing a filter for dirt capturing ability and maximum airflow.

I trust K&N. I recently installed the filter only and with that you guys dont have to worry about much since there's a secondary air filter built into the intake box AND there's a wire mesh behind that before the air goes through to the throttle body. I found that out because I ripped the secondary filter out because my car can't breathe. My brother is running a MAC cold air intake with a K&N cone filter straight to his intake manifold on his 2001 Saleen S281. 150,000 miles already and the FORD hasn't broken down yet. So I dont think a little bit of dirt really kills the car.

I've researched, hell I've ran my motorcycle in races in the past at 14,000 RPM's, and I choose K&N.

To each their own, this will be debated for the rest of our lives, lets don't do it now.


Back to the original question, I got better gas milage by running a K&N Gen 2 setup.

I was not taking a shot at K&N but at every product maker that does a lot of advertising. If good and average products advertise the same, who's to know which one to pick. I went to the Air Filter forum at BotIsTheOilGuy.

I don't know it this means anything, but when I switched to Red Line engine oil, transmission oil and gear oil my range reading went from 470's to 490's (after a couple of tanks of gas). I know the computer is optimistic but there was a change. And I think you'd get the same with most other synthetic oils. And, again, I think the biggest problem with getting good gas mileage is the brake pedal.
