Better gas mileage

Got 20 MPG!!

Did a 160 mile fairly flat highway trip today & got over 22 MPG on the computer - which I figure should be real close to 20 MPG. I had the tires at 40 psi, 2 people, 87 octane gas, the A/C running at least half the time, and set the cruise at 65 MPH. Also Mobile 1 in the diffs & transfer case (but not the oil).

So it can be done!!! (but granted, those were probably at near idea conditions.)

and if you reset the counter right before the trip.. it'll get you that. You did all highway driving.

The point of all of this is to get CONSTANT mpg readings. I don't care if you can get 20mpg for one tank, nor 10mpg per tank (you must be nuts!), It has to be proven time over time.

The readings given out by Toyota is an average. Its not exact so therefore people will get under/over that number. If you can get exactly that time after time.. you must have a pretty consistant driving habit.

Another thing that affects the number is whether you reset it or not.
 
Yes, you are right - I did fail to mention that I reset the computer right when I filled up the tank, and immediately hit the highway.

If you want a picture of the future, look at gas prices in Europe - now Canada is signed up to Kyoto that's the way things will end up here eventually - when I left the UK, gas was around 80p a litre - around $2 per litre roughly. Most of that is tax - but you can bet on the Government here using Kyoto as an excuse to jack up gas taxes - that was the excuse used in the UK. You can also bet on those taxes disappearing into thin air in the way they seemed to in the UK as well...
 
When I put medium grade in the V8 the computer indicates about 10% better mileage than when I run the cheap stuff.

Are others using 87 octane or 89 octane (or the super premium stuff) and does it change your mpg?
 
My range hit an all time high of 441 miles after a fill up. (using Hess 87' religiously)

Now that I carpool and use the HOV lanes on the days that I travel, and since the HOV lanes are enforced at about 60-65mph, it's amazing to see my savings. (MPG is also good with the A/C on the first level - gotta have climate control for the co-worker you know)

I realize that 441 is not realistic number, considering the computer is off by quite a bit. But, to reach that milestone is something pretty cool.
 
With gas prices the way they are I don't see why people don't buy a beater car. I myself plan to keep my FoRunna :D for a while and would rather keep the mileage off of it AND get better gas mileage. I know some live in states where insurance is high (I know I just moved out of NJ) but when I can get the same distance with a tank half the size (and cost to fill) I love it. I bought a fun car (Miata) but to be honest I missed a manual trans.

That's interesting. I was averaging 23K miles a year w/ the 4run'r and always wanted to learn how to drive stick. I bought a 5speed mazda mx6 to offset the mileage and to remain under the warranty (5year 75K miles), and I pay 600 (just for the mazda) in insurance for the year. I can acheive 27-28mpg if I drive the mazda gently... The thing is, with a beater car, I beat it, and tend to drive faster (eeks)...

There goes my fuel economy and that whole theory of saving money (maintenence on an older car costs a lot too)

$600 for the year isn't bad at all.

I bought the Miata because I sold my Jeep (convertable) and wanted something I can take the top off and get good gas mileage. It actually isn't too much a beater with 45k on it and a 1996. I never knew it would be so much fun being rear wheel drive and handling so well. Before the Miata I used a 91 Acura Integra as my beater and it was GREAT... the car wouldn't break.

I'd say get a Toyota or Honda as a beater.... less chances of trouble.

Back to the point my AWD V8 T4R sucks down gas.... way too much. I think the best I can get to and from work is 17mpg if that. The Miata gets like 28 or so driving quickly. I have 40k on my FoRunna (sorry, sounds funny so I have to say it) now and it is an 04... I need to calm down with the mileage. I use it to tow my toys and that is it. My gf just got a 4 door car so if I have to haul asses around I use that. :D
 
lighter weight oil?

So i saw on the local Phoenix news this morning a guy talking about improving gas mileage on your vehicle buy switching to a lighter weight oil.

he claims to have improved by 2mpg by switching from a 10w-30 to a 0w-20.

Does this work? from what he was saying it would.

opinions please...

and what weight do you run

I run Amsoil 0w-30 and 75w-90 in the diffs and transfer case. I don't know if it improved the MPG, I would think it did, I did it for the extended change intervals.

Did anyone respond to the MSD ignition system being a gas saver? I'd be interested in added horses and better MPG. C'mon, I can't be the only one!
 
I'm not sure if that's absolutely true. If the manufacturer built the vehicle with a restrictive exhaust system, I can see how adding a more free-flowing after market exhaust could help the vehicle gain more horses while at the same time help the gas mileage.

I'm not an automotive engineer but it seems like common sense.
 
Positive Results

I've saw postitive results on every single vehicle I've put an intake and exhaust on. I've also used the MSD boxes that you ask about but on Heavily modded cars, I ran a built Civic, and a built Mustang with the respective MSD 6AL, and the MSD SC.

I would recommend them for more power, but I've never saw an increase in milage from them.

Exhaust and intake however, every single time. Over the period of about 25,000 miles, the exhaust will pay for itself in gas price savings from the increased milage. It's my next purchase as previously stated.

That AND if you want to get really silly with it the air gets more dense producing more drag. Right ?
