BFGoodrich T/A KO tires on a stock rig, advice needed

So I'm excited to have acquired a used 2002 4Runner, pretty much all stock. I'm not planning on lifting my truck any time soon so everything will be stock. Every now and then I'll be headed out to Lake Tahoe and plan to hit snow roads/trails. I plan to test my new baby out with a bit of light 4WDriving.

The truck currently has fugly Costco Michelin tires that are close to balding so I'm in for some new tires. I've finally decided on a nice set of BFGoodrich All-Terrail T/A KOs but I'm wondering if I could move from a P265 70 R16 (my balding Michelins) to a new set of KO's at P265 75 R16, that would be a sidewall height/aspect ratio difference of 5.

So has anyone had KO's with aspect ratio of P265 75 R16 with no rubbing on stock? Should I just save myself some trouble and keep it safe going with a new set of P265 70 R16? Thanks for any advice on this.

My baby needs some new shoes! :cheers:

You can run 265/75/16's with little to no rubbing. However, I would suggest looking at other tires. I LOVE the BFG AT's, but the only load rating you can get the 75's in is E which I think is total overkill for these rigs. I have a set and they are super stiff and noticeably heavy when compared to the set of 31x10.5's that I had on my Taco.
 
Good Year Duratracs in load range C 265/75/16. ZERO rubbing issues for me (No lift yet). Great off road and great in wet conditions. I'm in AZ, I have to drive to get to snow...:) But, lots of others on the site have given good feedback in snow.

Personally, I think they are one of the most aggressive A/T you can get. Look like Mud Terrains.

You can run 265/75/16's without an issue. But I agree with Hepar, I'd consider other tires too. I actually really like the Hankook DynaPro's. The Goodyear Duratracs are pretty good too. As are the Nitto TerrGrapplers.

I prefer to "responsive" to "heavy" or "stiff."

I have BFG 265/75/16 load range D All Terrian KO's on a stock tall 1999 sr5 and I have rubbed the fronts a couple times when the wheels are turned and flexed. It's not bad at all and hasn't happend in a while. It occured when they were new. I'm going back to 265/70/16when these wear out. That will be awhile as I'm getting great mileage. I have 46,000 miles on them and I think I have another 15,000 left in them. No kidding! I rotate them twice a year.

I have a friend with a stock 2001 SR5, he has BFG 265/75/16 laod range E. They look too big for his 4r but he likes them, although I don't think he'd he'd admit it if he didn't, lol

Anyway, I'm a fan of BFG's, You have to get load range D, don't mess with anything with a load range of E.

IMO if you are staying stock on a low-rider 2002 you'll be happiest with a 265/70/16. I think 265/70/16 will look best on your truck. You get just a little more "gear" with a shorter, lighter tire and it's a littler easier on steering and suspention.

I like to show a little wheel-well on a stock yota, ha ha

just my .02, these guys that love the Duratracs know what they are saying. I have not heard anyone say anything bad about the Duratracs.

PS-I think you'll find the 265/70 is more expensive than the 265/75, just be aware of that.

BTW - My white letters are out, they are just dirty. They are not solid white letters like BFG's.

Wow, thank you all for the great sound advice. I'm spreading "Likes" around to everyone on this thread! ;):

I'll be honest, I'm a BFG brand loyalist (I've had them on every truck I've owned) so it's really difficult for me to pass up the BFG T/A KO tires. I have never even heard of the GY DuraTrac series till now. So I checked out the taco and jeep sites and they have battle/polls over the BFG T/A KO vs GY DuraTrac and it looks like you can't go wrong with either, both having a balance of pros and cons when comparing.

So now I'll be even more specific... here is what I want in a set of tires in order of priority:

1) Durability- will last a very very very long time and very low risk of nail/screw punctures (BFG?)
2) Lightweight- save on gas and a little less wear on engine (DuraTrac?)
3) Visually Aggressive- Looks like it can manage to hit trail just buy looking at it (DuraTrac?)
4) Low cost- Goodyear rebate, seems to be cheaper (online prices BFG=$195 DuraTrac=$179) of the two brands (DuraTrac).
5) Overall quality- for some reason I'm still undecided...I really am a BFG fanboy lol

OK so I am now leaning towards the Duratracs. Any other comments from BFG owners before I make the jump? I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks again gang! :bluejump:
 
All I can say is that I was convinced I was getting BFG KO's even before I found my T4R. Everyone makes a wish list, right?

I read tire reviews until I couldn't read anymore. In the end, I wanted the softer ride of Duratracs load range C. I took the risk on the longevity issue. I think I only have 2500 miles on them, so only time will tell. BTW, I was able to fit my spare tire with Duratrac in stock location. Yes, I bought 5...:)

My T4R is NOT a daily driver, so I could have picked the stiffer KO's for wheelin. If yours is a Daily Driver, then there is no clearer choice than the Duratracs...IMHO.

Hope my biased opinion helps...ha.

Sorry, one more comment. I bought the road hazzard certs from Discount tire with them, that way if I puncture the side wall for any reason...new tire for me!

Hi, I have a stock 2000 4 wheel drive 4runner with BFG All Terrain T/A KO LT265-75-R16 with a load range of D. This is my daily driver and I have over 60,000 miles on the tires. I too am a big fan of BFG's and have used them extensively on other vehicles. I'll be needing new tires soon and will either look at these or the Goodyears Duratracs (They look cool). For my needs BFG's have been great and I haven't felt any changes in my ride due to the tires. When I first got them, I did experience slight rubbing just like the others have mentioned, but nothing major. Good luck with what you decide to get and let us know.

Your 1st priority is durability. You can't beat BFGs! I bought my 265/70 16 ATs in January of 2006 when I got my 96 4R 4x4, and I am getting ready to replace them when they hit 100,000 miles! That's right. I'm over 98k. I rotate them every 5-7k miles, check the air pressure monthly and have had no problems at all with them. I read you can use 265/75 16s without rub, so I have my next set in the garage. You get what you pay for. :bigok:

if i can run a 285 70 17 with out any noticeable rubbing in day to day driving(i only get rubbing when fully flexed and turned to lock) then you should be able to run the 265 75 16... but yeah id look for another tire, the BFG is a nice tire(i dont like they) but they are damn proud of that tire and they want gold for it, they are not worth it in my opinion. i have had a couple sets of them and i will never run them again, they did not last as long as they should have. now the nitto terra grapplers on the other hand are an amazing tire and im on my second set, i love them probably the best AT tire ive ever ran
 
I had 265/70/16's on my 3rd Gen (1998) and they were fine. I "upgraded" to Dunlop Discoverer SST's in a 265/75/16 and they were good off road but they were loud on the road, killed my MPG and my acceleration - but they did not rub.

My next set were BFG All-Terrain TA/KO's back in the 265/70/16's and I love them - no road noise, 60K warranty, still great off road.
 
I'm big on handling in the wet and the snow and the BFGs aren't as predictable and don't have the turn in bite I've experienced with over 3 years with the Duratracs. BFGs wear like rocks (thus some people seeing crazy miles) but they also will handle and feel like rocks to achieve that longevity and I know from experience.

BFGs kill off road (Duratracs are still pretty comparable) but once you hit the pavement again I think there's better choices.

The Duratracs have been gaining in popularity quite a bit here in Colorado as I see them on all types of trucks now quite regularly.

Duratracs have become a bit pricey since I've gotten my set but I think I'd get another set once these get another 4-5 years on them.

I've owned 4 sets of BFG's and when these ones wear out, I'll probably get a set of Duratracs. I'd say go Duras if you're set on getting 265/75/16's.
