hey guys, had a CEL thrown a few days ago. checked it right away. P0606. something I've never seen before in my years of wrenching. so i was scared. looked it up and its a PCM/ECM error. naturally i cleared it hoping it was just a fault. came back on next time i started my rig. now this is where it gets weird. cleared the code again and let it sit all day. let my mother in law borrow it to bring some boxes to storage. (Biggest mistake of my life and i knew better but had no option) came back to her house and picked it up. drove 1/8 mile to my buddys house and put it in park and heard an extremely scary noise. FYI i have a URD TCAI intake. (very high flow) and a full exhaust JBA long tubes, URD Y pipe and a custom cat back. So the noise i hear sounds like a rug doctor is hooked up to my intake. huge air sucking whooshing what ever you may call it. left it running and got out put my ear to the intake and it was evident that it was sucking way more then it ever has. way way more. turned it off and started to get scared, did a bunch of research to not much avail. after further listening with a stethascope it sounded like i had possibly had lost a cylinder ring and was just blowing air thru the combustion chamber. pulled all plugs and did a compression test. 150 psi across the board.. phew..... this is where I'm currently at

my next step is to rig up a oil pressure gauge to screw into my pressure sending unit. I will be doing this tomorrow when i pick up a gauge from the parts store.

been reading, searching and posting everywhere looking for any ideas comments suggestions and anyone having or had similar issues.

so please if you have any ideas let me know as it seems i won't be making it to moab this weekend and will have the 17 hours the FSM call for on a oil pump change.

my only other though it a possible air leak, if it is one its massive and has slipped past my fine tooth comb inspection. sorry for the novel hope some one out there like Bulldog or BlackWorksInc has some input.

Do you keep having the p0606 re-occur?Are there any related DTCs coming up as well?

Unfortunately those P0606's for Toyotas are pretty spot on, I don't see them very often; but of the ones we have found according to Toyota's testing (which isn't too much) it ends up being usually the PCM.

trying to get access to a snap on soulus tool tomorrow to look into the DTCs as well as my oil pressure. just using a cheap scan tool right now. any idea how much a new or remand ecm will set me back?

Chris - Your not from Aspen. The level of service on the front range isn't the same as Aspen. Please provide the proper level of service going forward..

*** Disclaimer - my comment was made in the joking sense. Unfortunately we hail from the poor village of Breckenridge.

Thanks, I should know to take that into consideration Eric. Reminds me of an old friend that bought a service station there. He was shocked when the previous owner told him how to price his work. Quick version - double what you would charge in the Front Range, swallow hard and double it again. I imagine he's retired by now.

CXS $250-300 is really cheap, I'll have to make a note of that in the future if I ever need one. $1200 is more inline with what we charge at the dealership, I would guess if you found some decent places you may be able to get around $800-1200 for a brand new unit; not sure how much flashing will cost you. Typically our ECMs come pre-programmed with only the VIN needing to be written (I believe that only started in '05-ish and above on some vehicles as my '04 doesn't seem to have a programmed VIN.)

ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM. Fits: 2005 TOYOTA 4Runner SR-5 4000CC 24-VALVE DOHC EFI, AUTOMATIC 5-SPEED | Village Toyota Parts

Shows a few different module part numbers between about $600-900 brand-new, you'd have to pull the part number off your existing unit to verify which one you need.

The item in the diagram you're looking for is 89661, there are two versions. GRN210 ($619.12) & GRN215 ($819.04) Unfortunately I am not sure which version is applicable for your vehicle. The best I can tell you is that the GRN sub-code indicates a 1GR-FE 4Runner where as the UZN indicates the 2UZ-FE 4Runner and is not applicable to your vehicle.

BlackWorksInc, I just did a quick search out of curiosity to see how hard it was to find what he was looking for. I didn't do anything more than a cursory search since nobody had replied and after he bumped the thread.

Mtn.Runner

So I figured it out, GRN210 indicates a 2WD 4Runner with the 1GR-FE while GRN215 indicates a 4WD version with the 1GR-FE

It took a while as not a lot of information seems to accurately explain the 210/215 portion of the snippet of the model code (i.e. does the 0 & 5 at the end of this small section of the vehicle model code indicate 2WD & 4WD exclusively or is it 2WD & Selectable 4WD vs. AWD?) I can't seem to find a very comprehensive answer on that...
