Bigger Tires on 2004 SR5?

Hi All,

I want to get new tires for my 2004 sr5, whose stock tires are 265-70-16. However, i can save $50 a tire ( cdn ) if i get 275-70-16. Which amounts to 1/4 " bigger tires.

Would this cause problems? Would the tires rub at all? i have heard that this size might rub ( from another site ) but i cant see how 1/4 would cause it to rub considering there is a ton of room in there.

Cause Problems

Thanks for the info. i didnt realize you could run even an inch bigger.

However wouldnt that size cause problems with the speedometer, fuel calculator, etc? Would the 1/4 inch increase on the tires i am contemplating cause a problem?

Thanks for the info guys! I picked up a set of BFG's AT KO's on the weekend in the cheaper, yet much bigger size of 265-75-16.

The runner looks substantially better with them and i have gut feeling it will perform better offroading and in the snow!!

However, the left wheel is rubbing at the back only when turning left and only when turning 100%, 98% it doesnt rub. And, it is only rubbing on that soft rubber suspension cover that sticks out a bit. Going to take of the tire off and fix that issue later this week. Since it isnt rubbing on anything substantial, i figured i would keep the tires and just fix the little issue.

As someone told me, "if it is rubbing on plastic, then it's self correcting"... :arrow:

Not always true, but that amount of rubbing does not sound bad.

I will be putting BFG AT 265/70-17s on my 4R Sport this week. My lift is not in yet, but hope to have it soon.

Good luck and let us know how the BFGs perform in the snow.
 
i'm getting some 33" BFGs in a day or two to give my 275/70 MTRs a little rest. :)

whitney - your BFGs won't require any trimming after your kit is on there, so that's going to look/be great!!
 
i'm so jealous that you have snow to play in!!!

i tried to put 35" BFG ATs on this weekend ... Anthony really thought they'd fit ... but turns out if i wanted them to fit, i'd need to grind up the frame and replace the upper control arms. ;)

so, as disappointing as that was, i am now in favor of smaller tires ... :D be sure to tell us when your tires get in and take pictures of it and the lift and SNOWWWW!
 
just curious....

um, maybe it's me... but.. many many people talking about putting bigger sneakers on their toys, but i don't hear anything about setting up proper ring and pinion... going from (as i have a sport edition) 30.4" overall tire diameter for stock, and putting on 33" or 35" tires... i just think the first thing that comes to my mind is having to change out front/rear ring and pinions to set up proper transmission gear ratio.... if one goes with 33" tires on the new 4runners, what gear ratio are they going to go to?

just wondering?

A number of people are running 33" with stock gearing and no issues. I have 32" and can't feel any difference in performance. I guess it pays to have 320 lb-ft :D
 
i asked anthony about this a long time ago ... he doesn't even notice a significant enough loss with his 37s to regear!
 
who has 37" tires on a 4th gen? that i have got to see pictures of.... it'll be my wallpaper for sure... i want mine jacked sky high.... hell, before i even bought it, i told my wife, "In ten years, i can use the V8, all wheel drive , Disk brakes for a bad ass trail rig" ... of course i got the, okay honey right after it....

and the, isn't your FJ-40 for that very reason...

um, wives.. you can never win!
 
i don't know exactly where the post is, but i know anthony's username here is fourunnabilly and that he's made a post about his truck with the 37s.

Snow results...

Well, it has snowed / freezing rain here in ottawa ontario off and on all for the last week which has given me a little test of the new tires.

On snow, they are awesome. And on ice... well.. they cant defy the laws of physics, they are slipping and a sliden. Which isnt often a bad thing!! :D

All i can say is that i am thankful that not ALL the power of the engine is transferred to the front when the rear looses traction. i was worried i would lose my fish tailing ability!! :D

It was funny, a friend of mine at work has an F-350 and was debating about the BFG KO's for his ride so he asked me if we can go for a spin so he could hear the tire noise, etc. We headed out at lunch and... didnt return till after 4!! :awais:

Lets just say we made a couple of "wrong turns" and ended up in some nice off roading places. When we returned, the truck was a nice shade of 'mud' brown. If i had the stock dunlops, i would STILL be in the forest trying to get out. i like the new tires!
 
2 questions...

How are the KO's for road noise? How quiet or noisy are they?
You said earlier that you can save a bit depending on size. Care to share where you got yours and how much?

The KO's are definately louder then the stock dunlops. I would have to assume they are louder then almost any all season tire since these are all terrains. They have an aggresive tread pattern. That being said, at 100 km/h, and with the radio on, the noise is hard to here. It doesnt bother me at all. They are awesome in the snow and mud!

I live in ottawa and got them at a place called Deals 4 Wheels. They were about $20 a tire cheaper then Frisby tires.

I got the 265-75-16 instead of the stock size of 265-70-16. Which equates to 15.8 inch radius as opposed to 15.3 for the stock. Which is 3.4% off on the spedometer when doing 100 km/h. Course, that is only if the spedometer is accurate in the first place! :)

The stock size for the ko's where 285 a tire, compared to 215 for the size i got. Supposedly only toyota using ko's in that size.

Thanks for the info. Can I bother you for more? I've search the threads and am trying to decide on a size (stock, narrower 245/75, wider 275/70, taller 265/75.) I'm assuming the radius you talk about is a calculated theoretical value. What is the actual "static radius" of the 265/75 you got (measured centre of wheel/ornament to pavement)? The stock Dunflop radius is 14 1/8" and I would like to know what the actual gain is.

Yes, but...

Thanks for the link but those are only theoretical numbers. I actually have access to the Tire & Rim Assoc. yearbook these are based on. These dimensions do not take into account the reality of a contact patch that results in a smaller actual radius due to tire loading and inflation. I am looking for the actual "static loaded radius" as the vehicle sits (each tire size and brand/manufacturer is different.) You can then calculate your actual gain/loss in vehicle ground clearance over what is currently on it.
 
New skins...

Decided to get the BFG A/T ko 275/70R16 just in time for the latest snow. Mounted them on a set of Toyota base steel wheels with matching hub caps. Got them because they are more surefooted for handling than the Dunflops and are rated as snow tires. Nicely fill out the wheel wells without any rubbing (slightly wider and taller than stock plus the beafier squared off tread) for a good look. Also gained an actual 5/8" more ground clearance.
Think twice about the noise before you put them on a daily driver. If you don't need the traction advantage of an A/T then stick to an A/S. They are the loudest tire I've had but I knew it before I bought. They sing a little at higher speeds (90+ kmh; 55+ mph) but they have a lug rumble around 35-45 kmh (25 mph).
