Black Chroming my bumpers today.

that looks great! dang man i wish i could see it in person. the pictures kind of make it kind of look like a regular black. either way it still makes a huge difference! keep us posted how it holds up in the weather

Update !!!!!!!
After a few car washes and temps changing 40 degrees in one day the paint has held up great. The bumpers tend to get lighter in color when it's cold outside. Not sure why. It might be in my head. Still looks good though. The grille and fender trim has held up as well. I go to a local DIY car wash and the power of the nozzle has not hurt the finish at all. Overall, I'm happy with the way it's held up so far. Haven't done any off-roading yet though.

you know i think my emblems do that too. its kinda wierd, sometimes it looks almost silver then black then chrome, then black chrome again lol!

:redbrick::redbrick:OK guys it's been awhile and have some bad news. About 3 weeks after I completed the de-chroming of my Runner I was heading down the highway and got stuck behind a salt truck who decided not to tarp his load. Needless to say I got hit with salt for few minutes pretty good. The paint on the front bumpers and grille now have chips bringing the chrome through. It's not too bad but I'm still pissed. It can be fixed though I just have to redo the front. It looks like glitter on the front of my truck. It looks like a stripper rubbed her ass on the front of my rig

That is why I don't recommend painting over anything chromed.....Not much out there can stop that from happening.....the surface of a quality Chrome piece will outlast any paint.....any day.
That being said, I like the look of a monochromatic paint scheme on the 4Runner, but in order to do it right, you'd have to replace the chrome pieces with just bare steel pieces, prime, base coat, and then tons of clear.
Hope it wasn't too much work to re-do........

I have painted my bumper twice now (thread up) and if I didn't have the Limited Flares which are a PIA to remove safely, I would take my bumper to get powder coated next time.

have you read any of the "how to paint your bumber" threads. I made a halfway decent one that might have helped.

Funny you ask that. I did have a paint and body guy guide through the process. I followed his and Dupli-color's instructions to a tee. Since it's a translucent paint it doesn't go on as thick as regular paint. If I wouldn't have been stuck behind that salt truck this wouldn't have happened. The cost have in the bumpers and grille are very minimal. I could redo this 5 times and it still wouldn't cost as much as new black bumper.

ok. from the pics it looked like a bad paint reaction.
I never tried to paint my front bumper but I can see how rocks/salt ect could be a problem.
