Black roof rails

Here's mine installed, I had the rails powder coated, and replaced the stock silver end caps with stock Toyota OEM black end caps

I'd like to get some expertise here. I just had my roof rails powdercoated, it looks like the seals that bolt down into the roof may have had some sort of sealant. I didn't reapply any and now I'm concerned about leaks. Anybody have advice/experience with this?

i've taken mine off and on a few times over the last year, using only the OEM hardware to put back on-- never added sealant and never had any leaking problems. it has rained really heavy several times, sat under melting snow, car washes, etc... no problems

the bolts have rubber gaskets on them, but maybe put some sealant on the bolt threads for some peace of mind.. though i didn't even do that TBH

Actually I did use red threadlocker on the bolts like it came originally although I don't really know if that was necessary. I was surprised to see it given it wasn't that extremely tight.

I've read to use sealant (black rtv for example) in the bolt holes and around the white tubes. There was a picture somewhere around here. That's what I'll be doing this weekend. Trying to figure out what type of paint to use. Hoping for a satin black plastic paint for the caps and semi gloss black type of paint for the rails.

I was going to scuff the plastic up, clean it well with rubbing alcohol and then use krylon fusion. I ended up buying TRD endcaps and getting the rails powdercoated.

You did it the right way. I'm doing it the cheap way lol. I want to see how long the paint lasts. When it scratches or looks bad I'll powdercoat. I don't anticipate the paint on the plastic to be too bad as long as I scuff it up nice and use the correct paint.

I wrapped mine in matte 3M vinyl. Cheap from amazon and pretty easy to do. held up well for almost two years now. Bought the Off road/Trail/Pro endcaps for $120 online. Done. Looks much better.

I'm hoping the OEM Toyota black rails will be reasonably priced and I'll get a set of those. Hard to beat the convenience and quality of a Toyota part showing up on the doorstep.

I had mine painted to match the trd pro wheels, think it was $150 or so. I don't plan on using them, more cosmetic than anything

You may be right but that would be insane when we already have the rails. I just had mine powdercoated for $100. I had to call a couple shops, the first one wanted $175.

Do you think Powder Coating is more durable than paint? I was thinking about getting my powder coated. Looks great BTW.:thumb: Thanks

Powder coating can be more durable then some paints. Some paints are more durable then powder coatings...lastly powder coating is also a type of "paint"

The key to durability after you select a quality coating is surface preparation followed by a quality wash and then a conversion coating, based on type of metal being coated. Steel is ideally best with an iron phosphate wash followed by a chrome sealer.

Just prepping with a sand blaster is not enough, even if you clean residue of profile with say MEK. You need pretreatment conversion coating before using powder or liquid top coat.

Avoid some textured type coatings as at low film builds they can have pinholing to substrate and porosity in thin areas. This can result in rust spots which will stain when they run, as well as beginning to undercut the coating at the hole resulting in creep followed by eventual delamination and coating failure.

I never found any. I ended up doing plasti dip and it doesn't look as good.
