Blacked out Headlights 06' Sport DIY

Just blacked out mine tonight. Started around midnight and finished about 20 minutes ago around 5.

I followed your instructions to a T but the only thing I had a really hard time with was once I got the main lens pulled apart. I couldn't figure out how to get the amber lens off without breaking a couple of the tabs. ohh well still worked out great and I love the out come ! thanks again [MENTION=46728]magert54[/MENTION] and [MENTION=98814]jsmith21[/MENTION] you should totally go for it man

Hey thanks man, that's pretty cool.

1st of all, when removing that headlight, he's not kidding about that bolt at the lower side. Its a total B****! once I finally got my two out, well actually 3 because one of them I thought I was working on the correct bolt and well apparently it wasn't one for the headlight, everything seems fine tho so f it haha but all in all don't do out side in the rain with freezing temps like this guy.

Before remove the bulbs/wires, rubber and plastic parts off the back of the headlight base...

Removed everything (hopefully) from the back of the headlight. I have a Gas oven and I used the same temp Magert54 did. but I had to put it in a little longer. Maybe the adhesive on these things get harder over time, not sure but mine need more time.

Alright so once I got the lens pulled away from the headlight base I had one hell of a time getting this stupid blinker/marker lens part from the inner backing plate. If there is some trick to this, I sure didn't figure it out! I broke a clip or two on these two. The good news is as long as there's 2/3 remaining you should be fine.

After sanding the chrome off the backing plate. not perfect but it was good enough

After painting the backing plate flat black. About 4 coats

With the paint dry, I put the headlight base and lens back together then back in the oven. Resecured all screws/loose parts. Make sure lens/base is seated correctly before you start to screw it back together. Is also took Magert54's advice and wrapped the seem in elect tape. worked well when the headlight was still warm from the oven, adheres great.

Reinstalled back in the 4R. DONE!

Awesome upgrade imo . This really wasn't hard to do it was just a bad idea to get into it at 8pm, outside, terrible weather, and was supposed to leave for the beach the next morning with the 4R haha give yourself more time and sleep!

OR PUT THEM SIDE by side for a few minutes then pull out then push them together. ? I have a free weekend tomorrow and am contemplating doing this.

I found it's easier to get them as close together as the hardened glue will let you and once it's all warmed up again, push them the rest of the way together.

so im doing this mod next month when im on vacation. im thinking about tinting the turn signal yellow/amber with some Krylon Stained Glass paint. i noticed that the headlight has a second lens for the marker and turn signal, my question is should i tint the lens or the reflector of the turn signal?

want to match the turn signal reflector with my fogs

and what makes me want to do this

Yeah, I placed the two together and then baked. Doing it that way helped seat them together very well. Once you have it screwed back together, try and apply the black electrical tape (if you choose to do that) to the seam all the way around while the head light is still nice and warm from the oven. It helps adhere the tape down nicely. I've had no moisture issue what so ever. Sry it took me a min to reply, haven't been on here a few days. Good luck, show us once your done!

Well that second marker/turn lens is clear with a little amber lens in it on the corner. I would thing you would need to paint the reflective parts on the backing. the amber piece on it should already match. Does that make sense?

the before and after. And then installed on my truck. This thread with [MENTION=106299]Brucewayne[/MENTION] and his tips helped a tremendous amount. I knicked a few corners of the painted part putting back together. So an FYI those who try to do this. Once separated make sure you pull or clean off any glue residue AWAY from the clear housing. That way it won't interfere when pressed together. I would give myself a C grade with this mod.

for those that have done this mod does it smell when they are in the oven. planing on putting them in the oven tonight and was getting questions from the family because they do not want me stinking up the oven/house

I didnt smell bad for mine. It was a hint of hot glue and paint but nothing 5 min of exhaust fan cant fix

cool thanks. planning on baking them apart tonight and paint tomorrow and then wait a few days for the paint to be cured and put them back together. i did notice on the pair of headlights i have as my spare do not have the caps for the two vent holes so im going to have to figure something out for that.

as far as the paint goes i picked up krylon fusion for plastic. i was told it works well to thats what im going with. im guessing there is no need for primer

Did mine a few months ago I just never posted pics in here. I also did the clear corner lens using VHT night shade, ended up having to wet sand them because the coating on the clear lens was causing the VHT to crack as they dried. Pretty happy with the way they came out!
