Blower motor replacement

Well glad I'm not off base in thinking I may have gotten shafted...

Like I mentioned I had not been to this dealer, nor will return, or to any Toyota dealer for that matter and couldn't be sure of their pricing practices.

Totally agree with both of you though. The diagnostic fee was mentioned, as seems is usual with most shops, however it was apparently not calculated into the estimate quoted to me and agreed on over the phone. Wasn't happy at all with that but would have probably let it go after voicing my displeasure to the service adviser I dealt with........what rubbed salt in the wound, as you both pointed out, was what the hell was there to really diagnose?? I brought it in, the tech was even standing there while I described the problem to the adviser, and it seemed like the obvious consensus was "bad blower motor". In retrospect, when it took them until 3p.m. yesterday to call with an update I started to wonder about this place.

FWIW I did discuss all this with the service adviser, as well a "service manager" and made clear my displeasure and lack of any future business with them. They stuck to their guns regarding their policies though, and honestly I knew I was just wasting my breath and time.

Definitely not happy but not going to dwell on it. Maybe an email to a higher up later on. Don't really want to trash a place by name for the good of the forum, those in NOVA should be able to tell where it was from my last post, PM me otherwise.

A blower motor is typically 3 screws and a wire harness, almost as easy as changing a light bulb. It would have been worth while trying to clean it yourself first, the Tacomas have noise issues that are easily solved by this. If that didn't work, well once you're torn one apart to clean it, replacing it would be a cake walk.

So after two full days in the shop and $493.17 the trucks back with a quiet and powerful blower motor installed.
is it quieter than the original motor (when new; before issues started)?

for ~$120 in parts i'd do this myself if it quieted the fan down appreciably. it's always driven me slightly bonkers that even on the lowest setting i can easily hear the motor but barely feel the air.

sorry to hear the dealer wasn't totally square with you btw.

Ourisman Chantilly Toyota! There Jeff, I can smell those dirtbags from this coast.

You guessed it! HT is my go to for everything, especially now living in an apartment with a very tight parking garage. Ironically I figured this was gonna be an easy quick and not terribly expensive issue that a dealer could knock out in a day, boy was I wrong. Knew I was SOL warranty wise but still...

As to the new motor. Yes it is quieter. I'd say it's just like it was when I drove it off the lot. Hope it stays that way!!! That being said I will def find a way to do the repair myself should it ever happen again. Interior/electrical repairs are my least favorite thing to do but to save close to $500 I'd go do it in a parking lot, lol.

Hope all is well out west Bobby!

Blower motor

Colleague just got his blower motor replaced, 2013 SR5. Said it was making audible fan noise.

So, maybe not a rare thing. FYI, FWIW.

Not sure but when I have had issues with mine it has always made more noise in the winter, or when its cold out, leading me to believe they used crappy grease or not enough of it, in the bearing, or just a cheap bearing in general.

What I am really curious about; I have a brand new in box blower motor I bought for my 3rd gen, looking at the service manual it looks really similar, I wonder if it is the same? Seems like a part they would just generate a new part number for honestly.

I guess if I ever feel ambitious enough to find out I take the new one out and look...

Hi, Wanted to thank the member who posted the replacement diagrams, and the other contributors. My wife's 2010, had one issue a couple months ago where the blower stopped working but, started working again after the car was off for a while. Today in 100 degree heat index, it quit again with the kids in the car. I had already ordered the part a couple months back, in case it happened again. With the contributions on this thread, it took about 15 minutes to put in a brand new blower motor, save hundreds over a dealer visit, and most of all, make the wife happy. Thanks again

Was at the Toyota parts center the other day and overheard a shop guy talking to the checkout ladies about the backorder that they are having for blower motors in the new Tacomas, supposedly it's a large issue and I wouldn't be surprised if 4Runners share the same part, but don't know for fact.

It would be nice if Toyota revises the part... I'd love it to have a bit more gusto in its blow.

I've got a 2016 and am experiencing the same thing. Blower "chatter" and speed variations on it's own.

My girlfriend's 2016 Tacoma already had to have it's replaced at around 35k miles. Definitely seems like an issue.

I have a 15' TRD Pro with 43K miles on it. I had my blower motor go on me last week. It was 95 degrees out and the fan wouldn't work at all. I was at work and didn't have time to make it to a Toyota dealership so I picked up a 3rd party blower from an Autozone down the street.

Pulled the small plastic trim under the dash off in the parking lot. 3x 8MM Bolts and the wire harness. 10 Minute install and it worked perfectly fine. Spent $126 and the blower motor came with a lifetime warranty. The motor is slightttttly louder than the OEM but I already don't even notice it anymore. Blows strong. And I get a free replacement for life :)

Mine began ticking just recently (2013 @ 172K!). Even as we head into October, we still get WAY too hot down here in Texas to imagine going w/o A/C.

Thanks to Jeremy556 and 96r50 for posting the info here. I preemptively ordered the last one Amazon Prime had available and will likely sawp it this Saturday

My '10 had to be replaced in the middle of a -17 degree day in ND - let me tell ya, I'd rather loose the fan in the dead of summer than the dead of winter.

So. Cold. [emoji3063]

Got it swapped in a flash! Seems to blow a bit harder now (lol - what did I just say? :baby:).

The swap was so easy. I can't believe anyone would charge more than 0.25 hours for that job :) $350 in labor is just wrong, period...

Thanks again for all the easy to find info.

Saw this thread pop up and now I'm gonna have to go get a new blower motor. Mine has been making a buzzing noise for a while and seems a bit weak. Thanks T4R forum for making me spend more money.:lmao:

Was wondering if any of you have had your blower motor replaced? Couldn't find many 5th gen. threads relating to a problem with them.

2014 TE with 47xxx miles, started to notice a "ticking" relating to the speed of the blower a few months ago. Happens on all settings and vent directions.

"Ticking" has gotten worse recently and fan speed seems to vary on its own, today the fan completely died.

Cabin filter is replaced regularly but checked for obstructions anyway and all looks good. Figuring there wasn't much to be done I checked the general area of the blower motor, but still no movement. Blower finally came back on as I accelerated onto the freeway but now comes on only at random.

Had a GX whose blower motor made the same ticking sound but it held strong in the 75xxx miles I owned it. Anyone replaced, or had one replaced on a 5th gen.? Doesn't look terribly hard to get to but being an apartment dweller I'm gonna take it in (where it will of course work perfectly for the dealer).

Know I'm not under warranty so if anyone else has had theirs replaced I'd love to know what I can expect.

Thanks in advance!

This is happening to my 2014 as well. Just started.

This is my case as well. When the snow melts here in CO, i'll just undo the panel and grease it up. I'm sure it will solve the problem.

2018 TRD Pro here
10K miles

Noticed a slight bearing noise relating to fan speed. Most noticeable on medium fan speed. Had it replaced under warranty within a day.

Looks pretty easy.

Thanks for posting the diagrams.

Had a consistent hum since 5k miles but intermittent chatter like a baseball card in bike spokes. Been turning up the radio when I heard it but after seeing this thread and learning how easy it was to access I found a 3 inch piece of electrical tape in there. Now back to the hum... and hopefully no more clicking lol.:thumb3:

What's the verdict on OEM vs aftermarket blower replacement? Mine has been noisy for awhile and now the airflow is way down, I need to replace quick before it gets any hotter
