So, my ABS pump went out and I was able to replace it with a rebuilt one off of ebay. I just thought I would share since it seems a common thing for the early 4th gens.
03 04 Toyota 4Runner Lexus GX470 ABS Brake Booster Pump Motor Rebuilt | eBay
Same seller and everything. Guy was really easy to work with. He says you can't replace the pump without removing the master, and I'm not sure that you can, but it seems possible with the right allen keys and such. Might be more trouble than it's worth though.

Brake feels spongy. Help!!
Hi All,
I need your help and se everyone has problems with their brakes. I have a 04 sport with 110K. I had this problem for so many years now and now i suspect that it may be the master brake cylinder. When i compress my brakes, it feels spongy and brakes dont feel strong. How do i diagnose to see if my master cylinder is bad or not? Is it air in the brake lines, is it the calipers? I have changed the calipers many times since i own the car. It can't be the calipers. please advise...

Pretty sure it was the master cylinder, The guy in Florida that sold me the rebuilt unit called me back when he got the bad core. Said the brake fluid was contaminated. I'm convinced those clowns at Jiffy Lube put the wrong stuff in. Don't let your wife go anywhere near those places. And yes, I did replace the whole unit and flushed all the fluid through the lines.

SO WHAT did you end up buying?
new unit is more than $1700, used is $300 to $ 600 range.
when mine crapped out, i went the used unit route, 2yrs going strong, though it has started pulsing /buzzing at every braking -- so i guess its on its way out again
I reecently bought a 2008 SR5 off an insurance auction with an airbag blown and a brake issue, hopefully I can diagnose the brake issue. Im going to have my mechanic look at it before I pull the trigger on buying the brake unit. Ive had simmilar symptoms such as my pedal going straight to the floor and the abs light going off but thats about it, ive heard no noises coming from the unit. Im not 100% on diagnosing the issue therefore thats why im having my mechanic look at it. Hoping for the best!

Don’t know why an accident would cause this, but not sure why my battery dying would do what happened to me. Check out my profile and started threads. My dead 4Runner thread may be of use to you. If you decide to get a used master cylinder assembly, make sure you get the right part number given you have an 08. Those are different.
Thank you for the support! How or where would I be able to find the correct part number? When searching around for the part I just search for "2008 ABS Brake Pump........". Would I be finding the correct one by just simply searching the year for the truck or would I have to go and find the specific part number and find the correct unit that way? Thanks in advance!

Check on page 4 of my thread, which is where I ran into this specific issue. But basically, if you look on eBay or go to a salvage yard, the master cylinder assembly is the same for 05-09, which is true. But the ABS computer which is the big black box on the outside of the master cylinder assembly changed in 08. I have an 08 also, and thinking it was all the same I bought an 07 assembly, which has the 07 ABS computer, and had all sorts of issues with my VSC not acting right. When I realized my mistake I matched the number on the ABS computer to one on eBay and that fixed all my problems. My thread has pics and even a link to a DIY that was useful in changing the assembly myself.

This was my first toyota purchase and my second vehicle purchase ever and im glad the community is so supportive. Makes it hard not to be a proud owner!
