Brake pad options

I am looking for a really good quality brake pad for my 04 sr5. I changed my brakes out once and they are squealing like crazy and the amount of dust produced is awful on the wheels. They were resurfaced once but didn't do the rear rotors. Any suggestions?

Are the Wagner Thermo Quiets a good option?

Thank you for the feedback!

I would still consider TRD to be OEM+. Lol. I ran eBC years ago on another car and they were ok. I think I am just becoming old in my young age. OEM is fine with me.

Well I'm using hawk lts pads with stoptech slotted rotors, so far it's good, I had ebc yellow pads b4 and they were good, just a lot more dust, green stuff is good, just get the 7000s series for the front if u Want less dust. To me the best grip pads is yellowstuff, but be warned it's dusty.

I replaced my pads with another set of OEM pads. Other than the price I don't see a reason to use something else on my 4Runner.

EBC Green Stuff Pads

I installed EBC Greenstuff pads front and rear a few months ago and I love them. They do dust a bit, but I wash my truck every-other week, so it's not a big deal. I will say that sometimes when I have to stomp on the brakes I am surprised by the bite that they have. My OEM pads were very worn with 90k miles on them, so obviously the difference after changing felt like day and night.

I installed the akebono OE replacement pads and have been quite happy with them. Good bite, no noise and low dust.

I have never tried a "performance" pad on any of my 4Runners.

For me I just feel the more weight I add to the 4Runner the more I'd like to counteract that by improving the braking system (a lot of times people will over look improving the braking performance when upgrading for power, strength, adding extra weight, ect.) Right now I have the "Sport Braking Package" which have the larger front calipers when compared to a standard 4th gen and they do a great job as is, but I do feel I'd like a little more "Bite" when braking at times. While a Big Brake Kit like the one from Stoptech (the TRD kit for FJ Cruisers) seems a bit overkill at $3k (also I believe they're on stop sale at the moment :( ), a better performance pad and rotors are a cheaper and probably more overall efficient way to improve braking performance as I load up the 4Runner.

I haven't really been in a situation with the 4Runner I really wanted more. My car that I use for HDPE I have a shelf of pads that I match with tires and the specific track we are at. But so far the 4Runner OEM pads has been satisfactory for my more 'overland' type use.

I've actually been thinking about going with Stoptech (TRD) or even some EBC stuff, I want some more bite; anyone have experience or suggestions (also lets talk rotors since they go with pads as well?) :D

I have EBC rotors and pads on my runner and now they are pulsating (just 3 weeks of ownership). Told the rotors are warped (brake "scrubbing", "burning") didn't work. I'm going back to OEMs, not happy with the EBCs.

The stoptech/trd compound is very good as an all rounder. no noise, good cold and hot bit, good modulation, good life, and imo good value. down side is they are dusty. If they are good enough for me in racing situations with constant use, they should be good for you for whatever you do. If you want a pad that doesn't dust then look elsewhere. The trd fj brake kit is discontinued due to its recall and it could have been had for under $2 grand easy. rotors I go towards centric. This would be a "brake kit" I would recommend if you don't want to shell out big bucks for a real brake kit like I'm going to do soon. Stainless steel brake lines (im using stoptech ones but there are plenty out there do to the necessity from lift kits) TRD pads for the front, motul 600 or 660 dot 4 (I use the 660) rotor choice would be up to you but I have used both centric and stoptech slotted with good results. But on a latter note please be aware that your braking force is only as good as the traction you are able to put down.

Can you post some links for those parts? I'll admit I'm a hair lazy when it cmes to the Googling on the weekends.

Also I had heard they stop sold the FJ BBK, what was the recall about?

Because they designed the kit for wheels too small (16in). There would be a "possibility" for the wheel/tire to contact the brake line from incorrectly placed wheel weights.

So would you recommend changing out the rotors also or can I just use the stock ones and have them resurfaced? I just use my t4r for day to day use and not much offloading. But I would like to make it a comfortable car to ride in and also to eliminate its squeal when I brake. I just put average brakes in before because it was all I could afford, but I would like to put ones in that are a little more solid this time. The Wagners are on sale currently so thought they might be a good buy. Any ideas about it?

Also how did you do that mod to your gauges to make the lights blue? That looks amazing!!

You can reuse your stock rotors so long as they are in good shape, resurfacing is a plus. I'm sorry, I have no experience with wagners. If unsure I would tell you to go with an oem pad.

No it's totally fine. I really appreciate the feedback from everyone. I have been on this site for a while but just started asking questions and I appreciate the information a lot!

I threw some TRD pads on last weak, couldn't be happier with the braking power, but at the same time, I DID replace the front calipers, as they were seized for god knows how long, lol. So it could be the combo, but based on how my mom's feels, I prefer my braking now. She's got OEM pads and (AFAIK) not seized calipers.
