Brake Pedal Lock?

I have another road trip coming up and will be staying in hotels in unknown areas. On these trips I often end up in shady areas and with the truck loaded with nice stuff. I know some of you guys also have road trips scheduled.

So I got to thinking about smash and grab theft deterrent, or at a minimum, even if a window is smashed and some stuff yoinked, at least a way to prevent the whole truck from being gone.

I always thought the brake pedal locks looked stout, as long as they use a tubular high security key.

So is anyone running a Brake Pedal Lock?

By often going to these so called "shady areas" you not only could get your belongings stolen but bring harm to yourself.:bash: Why not just avoid these area's unless there is a reason you frequent them? :wink2:

A good alarm with glass break sensor will help, also stay in hotels where you are able to park outside of your room and not in multi-story buildings where your alarm will just be ignored as nuisance :boink:

As for the brake pedal lock or any other kind of club device or even the best alarm system, if they want your truck they are going to take it.

yeah, yeah, yeah avoidance is great.

but.......... traveling with a dog does not allow you to stay in Hilton hotels, or even a Hampton.

It is more like a La Quinta at the best, and those are really pretty nice.

This topic is about booking a room at a La Quinta or Red Roof or any other place in another part of the country that you don't know well. You have no way of knowing in advance what it will be like.

In my opinion, for the most part, audible car alarms are a complete waste of money. They really have no deterrent value until glass is broken.

Just in case of bad surroundings I'd like to have some physical barrier from the vehicle being MIA like the brake lock (However, I suppose it would merely be a deterrent if the thief is very cleaver)

I travel with a 4 legged companion most of the time, and what I do to try to avoid crap areas is to find something like a Microtel, outside of a metro area.

Agreed on audible alarm being useless. How about an alarm with a pager function?

Also, I know historically, 4runners are a very high theft vehicle, but I haven't seen any info on the 5th gen. In the 90s to late 2000s (in my area, at least) 4runners made up a huge percentage of vehicles on the road, meaning a huge market for chopped parts.

I never saw a trail edition until December of 2011, and since then, I have only seen 2 others on the road. SR5 and Limiteds I see 1-2 per day (compared to 80-100 3-4th gens in Atlanta traffic), and had assumed was new model of Sequia, until I saw a TE and regained the interest for 4runners that I had lost in 2002.

If you're looking for a visual deterrent, I guess that would work. But again, professional thieves will have no issue defeating it. The professional ring that was running around the DC metro area a few years ago could hit half a dozen cars in a matter of minutes and make off with in-dash navigation, airbags, etc - not your typical smash and grab the iPod or GPS. They were able to bypass the alarm on my 05 Tacoma, a Land Rover, Mercedes, BMW, and a Jag in my parking garage without issue. So, I definitely agree with you about the audible alarm.

If you're really worried the vehicle being stolen, I would suggest removing some critical fuses and taking them into the hotel room with you. I've never tried this on my 4Runner, so I can't suggest which ones, but I've done it on other vehicles. :shrug:
