The 3rd gen comes like that, I don't understand why they change that!!?!?

Particularly the fact that the rear window being able to be rolled down is a 4Runner thing!!!

I am familiar with the odor you describe, but have only elicited it when seriously hammering the engine (i.e. 75 mph outside of Trinidad with a truck fully loaded with 1500 pounds of crap).

...just saw the "blade at 45" response, lol.

You could also try a different station / gasoline.

I almost always buy from BP, but tried my wife's favorite Holiday station to see if it helped mpg. It didn't, but the exhaust smell increased for that tank. Switched back and it got better. No wonder her RAV4 always smells like the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles every time it goes up a hill.

I also wondered if the ammonia smell was from the new car (or new seat covers) off-gassing. Or the AC getting all fertile and organic on me.

I almost always use SUNOCO high test. I didnt have this issue in my 13' Tacoma, but then again i RARELY drove with the rear window slider open, and the rear window was at least 5' away from the tailpipe on that truck.

And the exhaust on the Tacoma's (that I've seen, at least) is side-exit from the factory, which makes it all the more frustrating that the 4Runner isn't.

Time will tell. Drove today with the windows down, sunroof open, and back window down and didn't smell anything.

Probably a lot of variables but under hard acceleration I still get that smell every now and then. However, if I'm driving normally I don't typically experience the smell. Put it in sport mode and cruise around (let the rpm's get a bit higher) and see if you notice it.

Yes the Taco is side exhaust, which only makes sense that it would greatly help on the T4R with your ability to climb over things that may only clear your rear bumper by mere inches.... Slight oversight on Toyota's part....

I did some cruising around town this week, and with the window down on normal town roads there was no smell, but as soon as I got onto the highway and hit the throttle there it was again...and the back window went right back up!!

To piggyback on this thread...I get the horrible ammonia smell only in the morning. I roll down the back window and open the moonroof to get rid of the smell. I don't smell it under acceleration. I'm sure it's there, but I don't have the back window down. I don't smell it when I get in my truck at work after it's been sitting in a parking lot for 9-10 hours so I'm assuming the cat isn't outgassing as the truck sits. When I get in it in the morning after it's been sitting all night it smells like a cat peed in it. Am I worried about it? Not really. But it would be nice to know what it is and if there is something I can do to prevent it.

if you are smelling it when you first get in the vehicle and you roll the windows down to get rid of it.... a cat probably did pee in there. This is a sulfur smell under heavy acceleration. roll your back window down and gun it.... you will smell what they are talking about

Ah so. Well in that case, it's possible you have mice/nests in your vehicle. Mice pee in their nests. That smell can be your first clue. Give your engine compartment a good lookover for chewed wires, poop, other signs.

If indeed it's mice, you need to deal with it pronto.
