That is good to know. I still haven't ordered the union fitting or done this mod but i will soon.

ordered union fitting from Toyota.

installed rear breather using union fitting / old cap breather / 3/8 ID fuel Hose. I extended it up to the gas tank. Very easy to do and i am glad that i did it.

The 4th gen only has a breather cap on top of the dif... :/ kinda sucks!

I didn't either. (I assume you mean the stock check valve OE breather.) I stuck a cheap, fuel filter in the hose just to have some dust protection. I don't remember what I used but it's like the Fram G2. I don't like the idea of a check valve causing suction in the axle as it cools.

Agreed, I think the breather is useless unless somebody can tell me otherwise?

maybe I am missing something here but I do a lot of water crossing where water comes up over my rear axle in turn covering the breather. When the rear axle cools it will suck in air to replace the fluid as it cools and contracts. If the breather is under water instead of air I get water... I am going to extend it up to where my gas cap is... If i have water up that high I will have other concerns than am I going to get water in my dif... haha
Please correct me if I am wrong

Missed my previous post or I should have been more clear, I think adding the breather to the end of the extended hose is what I am saying is useless. When you look next to my gas cap you just see the hose with no breather attached.

Yeah now I feel ya. But I am going to put mine on to hopefully cut back on dust / mud that is going to be getting up there. I went out this past weekend and coated my truck in mud. somehow it even got into the gas filling area. had to power wash it out before i could fuel up. I have really bad luck haha if I did not put a cap on it I would end up with mud in there. I was thinking about throwing a fuel filter onto it. But idk how great of an idea that would be.

I did all my breathers including my transfer case / transmission / rear dif.
I ran my trans and transfer to the engine bay. brought it in right behind the engine next to the firewall and I put my rear diff in the car. Under the car there is a rubber cover under the rear left corner of my rug, i brought it up in there and then ran it into the side wall. let me know i can get you some pictures if you would like.

You need to remove the pad-eye on the driver side, and the plastic panel to gain access to one of the through holes, You will have to remove the rear floor panel and plug for the ability to peel the side panel off. You should see the port on the frame.
If you go below your vehicle and look behind the rear driver wheel well you will see two through ports with soft plastic caps, you may need to look for a little but they are pretty easy to see. check attached photo for plug location, sorry didn't take any photos at time of install :bash:

Fun mod!
The urge to modify continues...
I will replace the breather cap with one of those miniature air filters so air can move freely in an out as needed. I also didn't want to leave a big open hole under the body to accumulate water and grime so I cut holes in the two grommets that I went through and snaked the hose through. Pretty happy with the results.
Hope these pics help anyone who might want to do this. Thanks for all of the tips and info!!
