Are your links WAY too short or is it just the angle of the pic? That axle looks shifted forward a good inch or two...

You can thank that to toyotas short arm suspension on these 4runners. THose links are stock length, but when your really flexing they get on a steep angle, and pull the axle forward. Thats the reason for a long arm suspension. Im waiting for something to break and then Im planning on completely cutting off all that stuff.

You can't lengthen the links and use the stock mounts. If you did, when you compress a wheel it would arc into the rear of the wheel well and rear bumper.

The only way is to re-design the whole rear suspension. New mounts forward and longer links. This would allow for a larger arc and it wouldn't move as far forward when drooped.

Brian- have you re-measuerd your wheelbase? I'm wondering how much shorter it actually is. Stock is 105.3 according to Wikipedia...

I haven't measured it, but I'm sure it will be a little less than stock wheelbase since the more it's lifted, the shorter it gets. I would guess it's ~1-1.5" shorter than stock height. Yours is up about where mine is in the back so I'd imagine our wheelbases would be about the same.

A little update..
I went down to Driffter33's house yesterday and we got my TRD exhaust on (thanks Jay!). We also cleared some debris out of my front brake calipers and adjusted my rear brakes. I actually gained a little bit of power from the new exhaust too. Not much but enough to notice a difference coming up the mountain on my way back home.

The exhaust sounds really nice. It's almost as quiet as my stock exhaust at idle, but it comes alive after you get to about 2200 rpms and above. I like that it won't wake up the neighbors when I'm warming it up in the morning, but it gets a nice low tone on the road.

I hope I can see your runner in person someday, it looks great in the pics. Where did you end up getting your exhaust from? Also looking forward to a report on how those rear coils are doing.

Thanks, now that the snow is starting to melt up here, we gotta hit the trails this Spring/Summer! I'd like to see your truck up close too! The story behind the exhaust is a member on here rolled his 4runner and parted it out a few months ago. I ended up buying all 4 seats and when I was there picking them up, he mentioned that he had the motor, supercharger, tranny and exhaust for sale too. I wanted to buy it all but couldn't afford it at the time, so I told my buddy Jay about it. He ended up buying all that stuff and since he already had exhaust, he "sold" the exhaust to me for cheap! So I scored seats and an exhaust and Driffter33 scored his supercharger and a spare engine and tranny!

As far as the rear coils (OME 861s), I love them. I sit with about 4" of suspension lift back there after all the weight from my bumper and everything. I don't think I would recommend them to someone without extra weight just because they will probably ride pretty stiff and give you ~5-5.5" of lift, but they are working awesome for me!!

On a side note, when I went down to Jay's house to put my exhaust on, he had a rubber wheel for his drill that we used to remove my pinstriping. It's like a big pencil eraser and it takes stickers off without removing any paint (as long as you don't hold it in one spot for too long). It took about 5 minutes to remove all the pinstriping on both sides so if anyone is looking for a way to remove stickers off paint, this worked awesome. Now I have white "ghost" stripes cuz the paint behind the stripes never saw sunlight till now.

Little update...
My engine finally started missing really bad lately (kind of a long time in the making) and t ended up being burnt (or badly mis-adjusted) valves on #3 and #5. I also have a small HG leak into the combustion chamber (which I diagnsed by pulling the spark plugs overnight and seeing coolant in there in the morning). The cost of a valve job or a HG job on their own are almost as much as a full rebuild, so I just bit the bullet and went for it!

If all goes to plan, I will have her back by the end of the week with a newly rebuilt engine ready to go for at least another 205K!! I could have just done the valves and HGs, but I figured with my luck I would spin a rod bearing, or have ring issues, or something else in the not-so-distance future so it was a better choice to just start fresh with a clean slate.

Hey Brian,

Our trucks seem to be quite similar. I am (now stuck) at 199k, my tranny is great with no slipping, I have meticulously maintained my truck and now I am looking at head job. I hope to get this over with and back on-track soon.


what did they do in the rebuild for the $2200, what ALL did it entail?


Is there anything you would do different, recommend?
