Brian2sun Build Thread

Hey Brian,

Did the heim bolt shortening (rear control arm) help with gas skid/driveshaft clearance?

Not much, maybe a 1/4". The skid's other bolts do't allow it to shift over much more. With normal suspension (even lifted) it has enough clearance, but my heims allow the axle to have more side-to-side movement so that's why my driveshaft goes over towards the gas tank ~.5" more than everyone else's. I will need to do some hacking to mine to get it to work with the extra travel and changed geometry I have with my custom contol arms. I plan on going back down to Jay's on Saturday and we are going to modify it to work. Jay wanted to help because at some point he will be changing his links also (to my style or similar) and then he'll know in advance what needs to be done to make it work.

I know you just got a gas tank skid but have you considered swapping to an F150 tank? They fit up in the frame rails if you take out the spare tire crap, and since you have the CBI I'm guessing you don't have a spare under there;):

I have though about it a lot, but with all the added flex from my custom arms, my tank still clears the driveshaft fine, just not the skid. The problem I have with the F150 tank is the having to change over to the new fuel sensor and pump. Apparently no one has been able to get it to read quite right on they're gauge and since I like to do road trips, I need an accurate fuel meter. It will be easier for me to just take some material off the skid and call it done.My plan is to use the stock spare location to mount my compressor and an air tank.

what about just running the f-150 tank with a scan gauge and calling it good?

Not a bad idea, but mainly because I just spent $350 on a skid and don't want to sell it and loose $$. Plus if I went the F-150 route, I would have to buy a tank, fuel pump, the Scangauge ($$$), and the metal and hardware to fab some mounts, plus the time I would have to spend installing it and making it work - Or I could spend $0 and just cut a little out of the Lil' Skip's gas skid and be fine and still get my badass flex.

Ditto on that. Glen yoshida has his tank there, its a great spot to mount it.

Yeah, it looks like I could even get a couple of pretty big tanks up in there if I wanted to.

You are going to have to take some pictures, and PM or email them to me. I'm curious what you are going to do.

Yeah, I'll get some pics for ya. Not really sure what I'm going to do to it at this point either, but I'll figure out something.

I have been looking at the pics of mine I sent you. I have a pretty good idea of what I think will work but unfortunately I think will involve a few good love taps on the gas take and a little cutting and welding on the skid.

I don't think I'll have to mess with the actual tank at all since I've had these links (with the stock gas skid) for a couple of weeks now and the tank doesn't have any rub marks on it. I think Jason's is ok too.

Hopefully not but we can check it out here with the skid off and see how close it comes. we will make it all work out one way or another. we can also trim mine for my slider mount.

... or you could settle for an inch or so less flex in the rear and the problem would go away... :)

How is that gas tank skid working out? I've been seesawing on that skip's skid...

I have no major interference with my gas tank skid now. :) i had to hack some off the skid but its perfect now.

and its not just 1 inch of flex..... Why limit the truck? If it will flex then work around it instead of running limit straps (in this case a band-aid) ... You know even if it was an inch Im running trails that are hard enough that 1" more flex helps, And i know Brian and Jay run the same trails. My 4runner has never came close to this before>>>>>>

The skid itself is really beefy. My links make the axle come at the skid more from underneath (the arc has changed) so a rib on the 3rd member actually hangs up on the last .25" of the skid. I used to be able to rest on my factory frame bump stops because I banged and dented the thin stock skid out of the way, but because the Lil' Skip's skid is so thick, it just stops the axle ~3" short of hitting the bump now on the gas tank side. Limiting it now would be effectively putting my travel back to around stock. Definitely have to hack the skid a little.

Ever have any problems with the rear coils becoming unseated or shifting? I swear in that pic it looks like there is no way the driver side coil is still seated up top.
