Broken Icon Shock

Hey guys,

I just wanted to check in with the community here to see if anyone else has ever had any issues with their ICON setups.

I was driving home and noticed a bit of roll in the car, pulled off to the side to see a snapped lower mount on my rear ICON shock. I wasn't too far from home, so I just hobbled home. I've never had issues at all with ICON, so i'm definitely not trying to flame here. Rather, I'm just trying to get a check on if it might be time to check out something new for me. The truck has never been offroad yet, and the shocks were on the truck for less than 6 months.

BTW, the saddest part of this all is that the extended shock gashed my Volk TE37s... shredded... metal...everywhere...

Definitely not the first pic I was expecting to post of my truck, but...

Which Icon rear shocks do you have? There are at 4 different ones that I know of. The older 2.0" bodied ones were rebranded Edelbrock shocks with Icon stickers on them before they started making their own with the VS series. What rear spring set-up do you have?

Let's see the Volks!!!

It was the stage 1 kit from ICON that I picked up from Toytec in early 2011, so i'm not sure which exact shock it was in the rear. The 56505 looks a bit different than mine wrt to the rear lower mount, so i'm guessing mine may not have been the newest series.

Sorry, it was dark so I didn't get more pics. I'll get some pics of the TE's tomorrow too.. :)
 
Appears to be failure at weld.

Two potential conditions caused that failure:

1. Too much lift for the shock length. Shock was over extended and failed due to too much tensile stress.

2. Inferior weld of eyelit to shaft coupling. Cold welds that did not produce a strong connection.

Either way, ICON should take care of you. Sucks to see you damaged your rim.

Our trucks do not have limit straps to control axle droop. A combination of anti-roll bars (swaybars) and shock length control the droop of the axle.

In more rugged off-roading, where you are extending the shock to max length and it is supporting the weight of the axle and wheel, the shock can be damaged. Shocks are not made to be wheel travel limiters.

You may want to chat with ICON and see what they have to say about the need for limit straps for your truck when you ask for a replacement.

ICON seems to have a good reputation in the off-road industry, so I would not be worried about making a wholesale change in shock company for your truck.

My research finds that those ARE the older ones(Edelbrocks) as they had the gold rod end with the shock boots. The newer(better) ones are the VS series which are actually made by Icon and have a black CNC'd rod end and no boot.

There are a lot of reports of those older Edelbrocks failing over on the FJ and 120 forums.Your shock is warrantied for life but ask Toytec or Icon for an upgrade and even if you have to add a little extra money they are well worth it IMO.
 
I blew a seal on my old edelbrock Icons. Call Icon, they will make it right. They gave me over 1.5x over what I paid for them originally in discounts on their "big daddy" bypass shocks.

When Limamike broke an Icon shock at the FJ Summit they overnighted and installed a replacement at no charge, no questions asked.
 
Thanks for all of the input guys. I did lob an email over to ICON last night and I got a follow up call this morning. It was a super friendly call and as most have said earlier, they seemed to genuinely want to make things right. I haven't gotten any feedback on what exactly that is, but I'll let you all know what the outcome is.

EDIT: Here's a peek at the TE37's. The truck is dirty dirty dirty right now...
