Broken key fob

I have a 99 4runner and I have both of the original key fobs. The little ring that holds it to the keyring broke off, on both of them. Bought a cheap-o plastic jacket to fix the problem off ebay, lasted a few months, and the same thing the little ring to connect to the key ring broke off.

Has anyone found a quality sleeve or jacket or something to hold the remote to reattach it to my keyring? Called the Toyota dealer today and they have one for $9 but he said its a universal sleeve and I want one that looks good and is specific to our remote....thanks

I've had one of these for several years and it has held up great.
 
If you type in the FCC ID from the fob into ebay, I've seen new fobs (they don't look the same, but the seller says they work with the RS3000 security system) for $17. I think I've seen them on Amazon too. My original fob still has a little life left in it so I haven't purchased anything yet. But when it breaks I think I might try a new fob.
 
I tried one from Autozone and the internals from the factory remote didn't fit the new shell at all. Not even close and not surprising from a Dorman product.

I bought a new remote off of eBay for $18 and it works perfectly. I keep the one with the broken ring just as a spare.

A key fob is a generally decorative and at times useful item many people often carry with their keys, on a ring or a chain, for ease of tactile identification, to provide a better grip, or to make a personal statement. The word fob may be linked to the low German dialect for the word Fuppe, meaning "pocket", however, the real origin of the word is uncertain. Yeah its the broken ring part on the remote like what MONTYMTB posted, and I also tried the silicon jacket that he posted in the first reply, only lasted about 3 months for me. So does that first link in the first reply (the one with 2 remote shells off ebay) work for our key fobs...I went to Ace Hardware a while back and they had the same kinda thing but it was a slightly different size so it didnt fit the internal parts. Any other suggestions guys?

Our remotes are indeed fobs, but car remotes can also be part of the key, in the head or in a flip-key set up and those are NOT fobs. And, as pointed out above, fobs for other uses can be remotes or they can be only decorative.

The classic watch fob's function was to sit in a vest pocket and anchor the chain going to your pocket watch, which sat in a different pocket. It was not a remote.

Probably just better off getting a new fob off Amazon or eBay and program the 4Runner to it. Think mine from Amazon was $13 or something.
 
So he broke the remote fob... Not the key fob... Sorry this kinda went off track, I was trying to eliminate confusion and possibly give a upgrade option. Both are fobs yes, but the way it was originally worded made me think it was the key not the remote.
