broken OBD 2 onboard diagnostic connector 2004 4runner

Failed inspection due to a broken OBD 2 connector on my 2004 4runner. The mechanic made a few calls for this part with no luck. Told me it's better to get a connector from junk yard etc cause Toyota would want to replace the whole dashboard thing for $1500.

Question for experts here:

1. Do I need to get a model specific (2004 4runner) connector?
2. Where might I get one?

I need to get it soon cause my inspection expires in 2 days...

Alright since the connector is still sort of holding up, I ordered a male to female extension cable on Amazon. Hope it works!

Good luck. I can't believe that they would fail an inspection for that. I don't think that would happen in Missouri, thank God.

Yeah the guy said he can not connect the computer. When I said it might still connect he just looked at me with a straight face saying he doesn't want to risk damaging his $10,000 equipment.

The connector will probably work, I would wire tie it to your harness for the test. I would also find another guy for your inspection.

One has to wonder how it got broken in the first place. Unless someone is connecting an aftermarket scan tool into the connector, the only parties that would normally use it would be the dealer, or an inspection station. I can't say for sure, but from the pic, it almost looks like someone either pulled a connected device from port at an angle, or tried to force a poorly aligned connection device on to the port. Either of which could have resulted in that type of damage.

TechWrench you guessed right! A family member connected a sort of sensor for a research project and over time the weight of the sensor pulled itself off and broke the connector. She forgot to tell me because it didn't affect normal driving otherwise.

Looks like someone tried to jam a connector in there and messed it up...

You can try a new connector housing [P/N: 90980-11978] I can't really tell in your picture if the terminals are damaged, if they are you will want to replace them (can't find concrete information on what type/size terminal they are and they require a specialized crimping tool that crimps two portions of the terminal at once, easy to get from any electronics store.)
